The investment from the Heritage Lottery Fund will be used to create a national centre for horology at its base at Upton Hall in Nottinghamshire.
Sir Peter Luff, chair of the fund, said: “From Big Ben’s tower and the Liver building to the pocket watches and timepieces carried by great explorers, clocks and clockmaking have a long and proud history in the UK.
