We don't really have a jounalism forum, so I just included this here.

A 16-year-old killed his parents on New Years Eve. Now, I'm sure there is going to be all kinds of threads discussing gun control, lack of parenting, declining oral fibre, blah, blah, blah. However, I was interested in one passage in the story I read.

Read this passage, and see if you can tell what's wrong:

The teen, whose name has not been released, is in police custody in connection with the shooting deaths of his father, Steven Kologi, 44; mother, Linda Kologi, 42; sister, Brittany Kologi, 18; and a family friend, Mary Schultz, 70, who was residing at the Kologi home in Long Branch, New Jersey, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni and a statement from his office.

What. The. Actual. Fuck?!?! Soooo...they won't release the name, because he's a minor, but they will print the names of every single family member he shot, and the location, so that any half-retarded Rhesus Monkey with access to a computer can cross reference, and find the kid's name, within, like, five minutes. Really?!?! This is what passes for journalistic integrity these days?!?! I mean, for fuck's sake! If your gonna make it that easy, why pretend that you give a shit that he's a minor, and just print the kid's fuckin name?!?

Well, yes you are right. I don't know the laws in America, but in Canada there are regular blackouts of information, such as in these types of cases. So you say, "hey that's good" right? Quite often no, and I would prefer more details rather than less, though in the case of a minor, I agree that some censoring is required.

There's the other side of the coin as you can imagine, and one of many reasons socialism runs counter to liberty, transparency and accountability. This censorship also extends to defend the apparatus, government and abuses. A judge ordered a blackout of a murder case a few years ago, no further details were even given as to why. The accused turned out to be an undercover operative. The state simply protects them, even when they were charged and found guilty of murder. A caste system, protecting even the bad apples, while the good apples are encouraged to "get in line" with government whims.

Sometimes we get lucky and some good Canadian Samaritan or patriot leaks the information to Fox News or something (this happens in European terror cases also), but these are only in very few cases in which the situation is so insane that the U.S media takes interest in this. This happened with the Paul Bernardo sick murder case and also the CSIS "Heritage Front" case in the 1990s, in which CSIS was caught funding and sending in the #2 man in a racist group.

Just last year the OPP had a rape case go to court, and the OPP themselves blacked out the information of the accused, the court also supported this. Why? They said it was to protect the woman who was raped. Riiiight, absolutely no one believes that.

This is also why Americans need to be concerned about allegations of sexual abuse decades later, and often the accused even hides their identity. This to me is not consistent with any fair system of justice. If you accuse someone, you should confront them. Transparency is vital to a healthy democracy and justice system. Media has their important role in this also.

You are right, them giving the details of the family basically makes it easy to identify the minor, so they shouldn't have said anything if that was their intention. The question is of course, is this to be state ordered, or an editorial decision on behalf of news networks? They are vastly different.

In my opinion if they suggest they aren't going to name the juvenile and then give all of these details it's a backhanded way of telling you "we are going to give you his identity anyways, we just won't be so direct".

That's rather what I got out of it - "We're not going to give you his name," *wink, wink*

Uh...thanks? But, I'm an atheist. :)

Yeah. That's stupid.

Only one conclusion can be drawn from this.

CNN and The NYT are fake news.

Thanks for posting.

First, the story came from the local ABC affiliate. Second, since the events in the story actually happened, what the blue fuck does this have to do with "fake news". If that's what you got out of the OP, then you clearly didn't understand what you read.

Hmmmm. You don't know how fake news works. It's most often used when the events actually happened.

Catch up.

Okay. I'm going to assume this is some form of humour that I'm missing, because otherwise I cannot think of a rational response to such an irrational statement.
