Throwing away long-time friendships?

Teens are leaving FB by the droves. It's becoming "Mom's Place".

And they will be back when they get older and feel the need to stay connected with people.
Could be. Unless something better, and more secure comes along.

Facebook has too much of a following to be easily taken over by something else. Its managed to work its way into hosts of other websites and services.

Its very simplicity will win out over any percived privacy issues for most people.

There used to be MySpace buttons on websites, too. Easily removed.

Myspace was far klunkier than facebook ever was or is.

I never, ever talk politics on FB. It just irritates people.

That's what this place is for.

I have certain family members I can never talk politics with so I don't. We just discuss other things and it works fine. As far as friends, I have some I can and some I can't/don't and it works just fine because we all get along. I use FB to show off pics of daughter to folks who live far away and to keep in touch with family and friends I don't get to see much otherwise. I never post anything political nor do I like or respond to anything political. Mainly, to AVOID the drama that could ensue from it. Forums are a better place for that. And there is always the option of taking their posts out of your newsfeed which works great.

I just saw an exchange;

You ever get sick and tired of the rabid hatred from conservatives on Facebook? - Liberals Unite | Liberals Unite

Name Changed to Protect the Guilty: Hillary doesn’t stand a chance, not now. You are stuck on stupid, Sam, and you deserve whatever insults are thrown your way. You have ignored the truth and support Statism. It’s your religion. You are as bad as a Muslim in my opinion.

Name Changed to Protect the Guilty: Lower than a snakes belly.

Samuel Wynn Warde Insults are the last refuge of those with an intellectually weak argument. With all due respect, you are behaving like a traitor. For some reason you don’t like a duly elected public official and now you are calling for armed rebellion, revolution, civil war. Indeed, you are dancing precariously close to the edge of committing federal crimes with some of your more inflammatory statements. With all due respect you are becoming an embarassment with your cries for revolt, unwarranted verbal assaults on anyone with a differing opinion, and your religious intolerance.

Name Changed to Protect the Guilty: In my opinion you crossed that line a long time ago by advocating for socialism and the nanny state. Unamerican.

Samuel Wynn Warde Do you really think it is appropriate to lob such insults at me on my own profile, Name Changed to Protect the Guilty? Do you have no class, no self-respect, no sense of decency?

This is really disheartening to see you so consumed with hatred that you would lash out with such venom against a friend you have known for decades.

You seem to lack the objectivity to remember that having varying opinions IS AMERICAN. Or did you forget our country was founded on principles such as free expression, the right to disagree?

There are people in my life that I absolutely cannot and will not discuss politics with, based on exactly what happened in the exchange above. I can't imagine treating somebody like that, OR being treated like that.

I'm wondering how the rest of the board handles the non-believers in their life.

I love them where they are at. Accept them as they are. But I won't lie to them or compromise the truth either.

I am not a member of Facebook and do not know how it works. I guess I am not the right person to discuss Facebook. I wish you the best, BD. - Jeri

OMG

You would know me in a heart beat.

Wait a miniute I am the hot one................................

You guys don;t get it?

This is one of the reasons I don't mess with Facebook.

I agree with Mark Twain when he said, "“In religion and politics people’s beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second-hand, and without examination, from authorities who have not themselves examined the questions at issue but have taken them at second-hand from other non-examiners, whose opinions about them were not worth a brass farthing.”

I'm so happy that I don't do FB...my mom got into it with my cousin over politics on FB, and I thought the whole thing was ridiculous. If a friend or family member gave me shit to a point that I had enough, then I'd just tell them to drop it. I have way too many liberal people in my life to want to risk those relationships over one aspect when we have so many other things to enjoy about each other. That's why I come here to fuck with people.:D
I got some grand kids that use Facebook. IMHO, it does much more harm than good.

There is no such thing as a liberal "friend". We choose our friends, and I do not associate with the enemy.

Facebook is just a tool ... And cannot harm anyone.
People can cause mischief and ill will towards others with or without Facebook.
I just think it funny when people dislike or hate Facebook because of what the people they know do.

Facebook didn't make them who they are ... It just makes it easier for others to see who they are.

.

Rule number one= never talk politics with friends or loved ones.
Rule number two= never talk religion with friends or loved ones.
Rule number three=never talk religion OR politics with customers.
Rule number four= DO talk to your dog about the above. They don't care and will love ya anyway. :)

What a cop out. All that says is don't speak if what you believe because someone might be offended. If they are offended then don't listen.

You should never have to censor your political or religious speech to keep friends. If you do they are not friends

I agree with you but I just don't think Facebook for young teens is a good idea, particular girls. They talk themselves to tears, discussing the same problems over and over again, unable to move forward. One of the drawbacks in textual communication is lack of emotional feedback. Tears and smiles often don't make it into text. In discussing politics that's not a problem, but in sensitive personal communication it can be a big problem.

You know I did actually see a study where they said Facebook leads to depression in some people ... But I don't remember where it was.
From what they were saying ... Since most people post pictures of themselves on vacation or doing fun things ... Some people wondered why they don't have so many good times and would be more depressed.

It isn't like the other people were always having a good time ... They just didn't post pictures of them fighting with their spouse or taking out the garbage.
