Talk do your parents, guys.
Example: Dad asked me to take the several items that meant the most to me, about a year before he died, and gave me three items he wanted me to have specially. I said I could wait, and he said no, your brother X will take everything he wants and tell you that is how he (my dad) wanted it. Very wise. Everything disappeared in the week after the funeral. I have had a couple of strange conversations with him since then, but what he does not know can't hurt him.
Our mother's personal stuff went to my sisters: no problem. One of the brothers squealed a bit.
My stepfather, a good man, is in the care of a brother and sister. The estate will go to them and all the power to them for the effort.
