This whole mess can be done better and at lower bureaucratic expense by state and local operators.

I've been saying this for years. There is no reason why the federal government needs to be funding infrastructure spending nor do I see any Constitutional authorization for it. There is no reason the states cannot maintain their own infrastructure. Scrap the federal gas tax and let the states self fund their infrastructure needs.

Isn't the whole reason the feds are involved in infrastructure is because the states are doing a terrible job at it?

Nope. They keep them as categorical grants so federal politicians can pass them out as political patronage. States do a much better job putting the $$$ where it is needed.

partially i'd agree. but i don't think it's ever any ONE event that can drive such change. it just doesn't happen like that. people usually don't want to put that much though into it or are simply incapable of seeing big picture stuff so they blame the biggest piece they can see and call it a day.

but again - nothing that big falls because of 1 event or mismanagement.

if you look around at our country, we're doing the same. any 1 event we laugh off and move onto the next one. i see very few people string the events together to see a bigger picture on the horizon. we need to figure out we're not headed anywhere good here and stop the madness. or screw it - the civil war isn't too far off after all.
