U.S. government sues to block vouchers in some Louisiana school systems

The purpose of the Louisiana voucher system is to destroy what remains of the the public school system and move the remainder of the students into private schools. This is a process that began in the 1960's when white parents moved their students into private schools to escape integration. Louisiana has consistently ranked 49th to 50th in their quality of public educations. I suspect that Louisiana will be the first state to abandon public education in favor of private schools and will probably provide some of the best education in the country, for those that can afford it.

Good. Vouchers mean everyone can afford it.
Voucher pays only a small portion of the cost of the better private schools. Most students in public schools that can't afford private schools can't afford them either with or without vouchers

Voucher are nothing more than a means to divert money from public schools to reduce the cost of tuition for students attending private schools. There is no evidence vouchers motivate teachers to teach better or students to learn more.

The "better" private schools where the rich like Obama send their kids and can cost $80,000 per anum. However, perfectly good private schools that outperform government schools are cheaper than those government schools. There is no reason that vouchers that match the cost of government schooling can't be issued to parents, aside from the objections of the NEA and the NTF, that is.

You've posted all the usual NEA propaganda. You're a tool of the teacher's union. You don't give a damn about the children of poor people.

Thanks for letting us know you're nothing but another mindless partisan puke.

If you have any information on a Republican that has helped the middle class prosper, please post it.

You got the attention you wanted as a partisan douche, no need to belabor the point.

I'll make it easy. Can you name a Republican in the last 45 years that wrote or sponsored a bill that benefited the middle class and/or poor without giving a huge jump to the rich?

you obviously have no idea how the voucher system works.

the public school system in this country IS the roadblock for the better education of the kids.

It seems there is no other way to break down the shitty system except totally destroying it and starting all over.

Without teachers unions.

public education has become public indoctrination. it needs to be taken down and rebuilt.

Well you claim you are part of the one percent and support the far left mantra that the rich should pay their fair share.

So when are you going to do your part and not take advantage of the tax loopholes? When are you going to give all your money to the poor and back up that which you support?

I have very little problem with the voucher system. If this gives students a better chance at success in life than I am all for it.

Why does Holder hate black people??? Seriously you'd think he'd want blacks to go to good schools.

An educated populace can support themselves and don't need the government to provide for them. Self reliance is a problem for the Democratic Party.

When your dealing with a finite amount of money, why should taxpayers fund private corporate schools?
Why should they fund failed public schools when there is a viable alternative. Are you afraid the public schools couldn't compete, or are you afraid that the teachers' unions would be decimated and unable to contribute to Democrat candidates?

There are very good reasons why vouchers that match the cost of public schools can't be issue. First off, there is no reliable data that shows the average private school outperforms the average public school. Secondly, each dollar issued in vouchers does not reduce the cost of public schools by a dollar. In fact, it doesn't even come close The community is saddled with the cost of the vouchers plus the cost of the public schools. Those not familiar with private school seem to think the tuition is all one pays. There are always significant extra costs not paid for by vouchers which don't even cover the cost of tuition of most private schools.
  • Many private schools do not provide all books required and some don't provide any.
  • Transportation is also a common extra cost. This can be very significant since private schools are rarely neighborhood schools.
  • Most private schools assume students have their own computers and internet.
  • Then there is a hoard of fees such as testing fees and field trips.
Extracurricular actives such as sports, clubs, and social events which are often paid for either fully are in part by the public schools are usually paid by the parents.

With or without vouchers, private schools are just not practically for most low income families for a number of reasons.
  • Vouchers pay only a portion of the cost of private school attendance.
  • Most private schools that are able to accept vouchers are not located in low income area requiring parents to transport their children at their own expense..
  • Most parents, rich or poor prefer private schools run by religious organizations. Most of these schools either can not qualify for vouchers are they will not accept them.
  • Free and reduced lunches are only available in non-profit schools.
  • Nationwide, 20% of the students from low income families are enrolled in special ed. The cost of special ed is so high, that most private school either do not offer it or rely on public schools to provide it.
The bottom line is that the real purpose of vouchers is to assisted middle and upper income parents pay for pay for private schools creating two school systems, the public system for the poor and private schools for the middle class and the wealthy.

My question is why doesn't the State close the failing schools? Aren't they enabling this shit.

Schools fail because of lack of funding. Fund the schools if you want better education.
Mesa AZ $6855/pupil (2005 dollars)77.1% graduation rate
Detroit MI $19,529/pupil 24.9% graduation rate
Nashville TN $9,160/pupil 77% graduation rate
Indianapolis, IN $14,428/pupil 30.5% graduation rate.

Care to rethink that?

You are using 10 year old data. You're also cherry picking. Take a look at the best states.
The state Iowa graduation rate is 88% and no ethnic group fell below 73%. The cost per student is $9,700

Texas graduated 86 percent of its students. It boasted the highest Latino and Black high school graduation rates, at 82 percent and 81 percent, respectively. The cost per student $8,700.

The state of Tennessee graduates 86% of their students. The cost per student is $8,100.
