UPS to drop 15,000 spouses from insurance, cites Obamacare - Atlanta Business Chronicle

United Parcel Service Inc. plans to remove thousands of spouses from its medical plan because they are eligible for coverage elsewhere. The Atlanta-based logistics company points to the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, as a big reason for the decision, reports Kaiser Health News.

The decision comes as many analysts are downplaying the Affordable Care Act's effect on companies such as UPS, noting that the move reflects a long-term trend of shrinking corporate medical benefits, Kaiser Health News reports. But UPS repeatedly cites Obamacare to explain the decision, adding fuel to the debate over whether it erodes traditional employer coverage, Kaiser says.

Rising medical costs, “combined with the costs associated with the Affordable Care Act, have made it increasingly difficult to continue providing the same level of health care benefits to our employees at an affordable cost,” UPS said in a memo to employees.

According to Kaiser, UPS told white-collar workers two months ago that 15,000 working spouses eligible for coverage by their own employers would be excluded from the UPS plan in 2014.

UPS expects the move, which applies to non-union U.S. workers only, to save about $60 million a year, company spokesman Andy McGowan said.

Coming from UPS..it's pretty laughable.

They treat their employees like shit until they get into the Union..and they don't pay their parking tickets.

Actually they had pretty good benefits prior to Obamacare. Obamacare ruined that

I love how corporate America pretends that Obamacare is suddenly the reason they 'need' to cut back on employee healthcare benefits.

Obamacare is a fucking nightmare.
No wonder Congressman are opting-out. Even their dumb-asses know better.
Seems like only idiots - like you - are hanging on for what you believe is another freebie off the government teat.
Pay your own healthcare bills, numbnuts. I'm not footing your fucking bill.

From the Kaiser article:

"The health law requires large employers to cover employees and dependent children but not spouses or domestic partners."

So where's Obamacare to blame?

UPS plans to save 60 million dollars a year doing this. That doesn't sound like they're doing this cope with the cost of Obamacare.

UPS is saying to white collar employees, if your spouse works somewhere else where he or she can get insurance, then they'll have to get it there.

What does that have to do with Obamacare?

This is not new.

You know, there are companies where, if you opt out of their healthcare plan, that company will pay you for that decision.

So someone whose spouse is working for UPS could, in some situations, opt out of their own employer's plan, get money for doing so,

then go on the spouse's UPS plan and UPS gets to pay for it.

Look at the moonbats try to blame businesses for doing exactly what ObamaCare is designed to encourage.

The agenda is to force the country into Single Payer...and ObamaCare's programs are set up to destroy private insurance to soften up the country for The Goal.

What does a corporation's decision to drop coverage for spouses, who are working elsewhere and who can get employer coverage where they work, have to do with single payer?

If obama care was so great this wouldn't happen.

Why should UPS offer healthcare to people who don't work at UPS, and furthermore can get health insurance where they do work?

And what does that have to do with Obamacare?

Yea this is one big conspiracy to embarrass the King Obama it has nothing to do with Obama care

UPS drops those spouses that already have coverage, saves $60 million a year ... and "blames" Obamacare for saving them millions?

What have we missed here ....

It's only affecting non-union employees, don't worry. A 65 dollar fee for every spouse covered by employer? What the hell is that all about?

I admire your efforts but lets be honest, if you were able to demonstrate beyond a shadow of a doubt that Obamacare was directly responsible for the deaths of 1 million Americans the partisan drones on the Democratic side of the aisle would STILL attempt to rationalize it.

The bottom line is they haven't ever demonstrated that they care how this law negatively impacts peoples lives. It's been readily apparent for sometime now that they only care that their "side" "wins".
