Flint.

Saw a demonstration of flint-knapping in The Chislehurst Caves some 40 years ago and still marvel at the stuff primitive people could make from it. Also how it's still used to make the sharpest of surgical blades.

Rubies are awesome if they are a nice red. But the redder they are the more expensive they get. :(

Bernini's almost superhuman skill at shaping images of such tactile sensuality and beauty from cold stone is the kind of revelation that for me helps keep hope alive in a sometimes very ugly world.
