He seems to be saying that he was not attacking Putin. Rather, his March was a protest against the war in Ukraine.

The Russian Constitution requires Wagner troops to become part of the Russian military in order to participate in combat operations on Russian soil.

In September 2022 referendums in four areas of Russian occupied Ukraine resulted in those areas becoming part of the Russian Federation. Once that happened all Wagner forces operating in Ukraine were required to sign contracts with official armed forces of Russia.

This would have cost Prigozhin millions of dollars in income, and he threw a hissy fit like any good capitalist would do.
