Maine (June 16, 2015) – Today, the Maine state Senate joined the House and voted to override Gov. LePage’s veto of a bill to authorize hemp farming in the state without gaining any federal permission.

Introduced by Rep. Deborah Sanderson (R-Chelsea) and cosponsored by a bipartisan coalition of seven Senators and Representatives, LD4 amends the current hemp farming law in the state by removing a requirement that licenses are contingent on approval by the Federal Government. It reads, in part:

Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a person may plant, grow, harvest, possess, process, sell and buy industrial hemp

On May 12, the House voted 135-6 to override LaPage’s veto, and today, the Senate voted 27-6 to do the same. A 2/3 vote is required to override a veto in Maine and these votes easily cleared even that high hurdle.

Already on the books, Maine law authorized the same as long the Federal government gave permission to do so. Passage of LD4 into law removed the following from the Maine Revised Statutes:

Common sense Bipartisanship. Don't see that very often. This should give American Farmers a much-needed boost. Thank you Maine.

Ha, I hear ya. It was amazing watching good genuine Bipartisanship on display in Maine. Most Republicans voted to override a Republican Governor. How often does that happen?

About 15 minutes before the locusts arrive?

All jokes aside, hemp isn't the panacea that its growers make it out to be. But it is a cash crop. And there's no good reason we aren't growing it.

And we're on the same page with the drug war......for any drug less dangerous than alcohol.

This is going to become commonplace as time goes on. Once Colorado and Washington bucked the feds with legal marijuana, others began to follow: Alaska, Oregon, and now Nevada will have it on the 2016 ballot. Industrial hemp production, which should have never been outlawed for any logical reason in the first place, is another result. When states realize their economies can profit off of its manufacture others will follow Maine.

Spot On. It'll be a much-needed boost for American Farmers. I'm proud of Maine.
