At the very least, it opens you up to accusations of fraud.
At worst, it opens the door for actual fraud.

I get it, it’s california and the democrats cry foul out of one side of their mouth while actually Committing crimes out of the other, but still.

Could be they want to actually see how many Republicans are voting because California is going to go Democrat regardless. Bad idea but would be one way to see what's actually happening in some areas that have an extreme over abundance of registered voters; something around 160% or so excess in some LA areas.
