What's Up With Pizza Hut?

For some odd reason, I am having a strange craving for Chicago-style pizza at 3 in the morning! Man, I could eat a whole large pizza right about now!

My local guy makes:
  • 13 different giant custom salads.
  • 8 appetizers including pepperoni rolls and chicken wing.
  • 21 different hoagies including fish and a gigantic hoagie called the Flying Pig (1/2 is a meal).
  • 10 different calzone.
  • 10 different types of pasta dinners (which include salad and garlic bread). They cater food too and the pasta is amazing.
  • 22 types of custom pizza + Sicilian + make your own.
  • 6 kinds of delicious desert pies.
Chains operate off TV advertising; local private places depend on good food and earned reputation, not marketing and big signs along the street.

I miss an old place around here which made a pizza duo, which was kind of like two pizzas on top of each other with sauce and cheese in the middle.

They also made a fantastic desert pizza which was sort of sweet and crispy. Yum.

When I was living in Boston, MA - there was this really cool place where you could get pizzas and subs (even in the middle of the night!). They were open almost 24 hours a day. But only served on weekends. Anyways, they would serve pizzas and subs that were much better than Subway and Pizza Hut combined!
They closed down in 2000, so they are no longer around. It was called Carl's Pizza Joint (yes, that was the REAL name of the place). They were located near Fenway Park (where the Red Sox play).

They even had breakfast pizzas and subs - scrambled eggs, bacon, green peppers and onions and cheese on a bagel (made into a personal pizza). As well, as the same for subs on hoagie rolls. The sub rolls were baked on the spot! As well, as the pizza dough.
I missed that place!

I stopped eating Pizza Hut when they brought in frozen pizza bases years ago. I worked in one as a kid and the taste changed ovenightt.. It was cost control but the taste just deteriorated. It was very sad.
We have dominoes which is ok. We also havee Papa Johns which is apalling.
The best place is an indy called Carluccis or similar. They deliver as well.

I absolutely LOVE Pizza Hut and I want to order it next week when I got company coming over. However, I'm not sure whether or not it's the Pizza Huts in my area but they never give me their prices ahead of time on the menu when I go into order, so I'm going to have to make sure to ask for all of the prices there ahead of time when I get delivery over the phone.

I'm guessing that's probably because if their customers knew their prices ahead of time they would never order to begin with as I realize that it's rather expensive but I can't help but love their food.

I dont eat bacon myself

You don't!? How dare you!! That's blasphemous!! 😮
.
It ought to be. Years ago, a buddy of mine dated a pizza store owner and told me the profits on pizza were HUGE.

Thank Biden for rising prices.

Lol well I'm guessing that this thread had a hand in it. 😆

All the big chains suck: Dominos, Papa John, Pizza Hut, Little Caesars, The Pizza Company--- someone got the idea years ago to buy up all the stores into big corporations and now they want you to order over a website that won't even give you the prices until you enter a lot of personal information first, many don't hire their own drivers, and their dough comes prepackaged and premade--- I've had frozen that was better than some of them.

You don't like Papa John's?

Maybe I just had trouble navigating the website but I'm taking Justin Richardson's advice and going with Papa John's as they have better pizza anyways.

I think I tried them once and:
  1. Had to go through a web page. Couldn't even talk to them on the phone. I like personal service being able to talk to the people making my food, webpages are dehumanizing and contrary to the dining experience.
  2. As I recall, the pizza was so poor that I wondered how the place even stays in business.
There just is no substitute for a local, private place where there is no big marketed national chain, no franchise, and no pre-packaged corporate image full of trademarked colors, symbols and plastic signs to sell the food. Local places live or die by the QUALITY of their food alone and the satisfaction of their customers passed down by word of mouth to others, not slick TV marketing.

FYI: Usually chains that deliver can't give you menu prices until you enter your address in the app.

My private-owned local guy gives 20% off his entire menu if you order earlier in the day which is when I normally do. I don't believe in supporting greedy giant corporate chains.
There's a little pizza shop within a half mile but his pizza sucks. I don't know how he stays in business. It's really bad.

I got a local pizza shop btw. It's extremely good as I love greasy pizza. 😋

People buy these places up to give a go at it but they don't know how to make good pizza so usually die out within a few years. Anyone can make a pizza, but making good, fresh, actual hand tossed dough and a good spicy sauce with rich flavor, quality cheeses and ample toppings properly baked in a stone oven at 500° is not as easy as it seems.

Too much crust at the edge, too little crust, too much sauce, not enough, too moist crust, too dry, too much cheese (you can have too much) or not enough, toppings piled too high up on top/raw/ too lost down in the cheese, too soggy in the middle (usually too thin and/or too much toppings there), properly seasoned and baked pizza has crispy airy blisters around the edge that are not quite burnt. Toasted on the outside, chewy on the inside, no matter what toppings or style you like, I must have looked through a hundred photos finding these few that show actual ideal baked pizza. When you have a truly great pizza, you know it right away as soon as you open the box and take your first bite.
