I actually think it had a different reason. He's been getting increased critisism because of the violence. By shutting his rally down he gets the chance to lay the blame of inciting violence on the protesters. Something like 'Look what I had to do because of these ppl'. Makes sense in light of the fact that he shut the rally down himself altough the police said they had enough manpower
