Why are we giving away 1 billion dollar air defense systems?

You know, it's readily apparent that Trump doesn't understand how the military works.

This THAAD system that we have deployed to S. Korea are US developed systems that are operated by US personnel because it's a US system and has US classified systems built into it, so to keep our secrets safe, we deploy it to areas that we think it would be useful at.

If we were to sell it to S. Korea, they would have to send personnel over to the US to be trained on how to operate it, then take the system over, and we would have to hope they did it right. Even says so in the link...................

The deployment has also been a major topic of discussion in South Korea's ongoing presidential race. Front runner Moon Jae-in's top foreign policy adviser said Trump's suggestion that Seoul pay for Thaad would be an "impossible option".

"Even if we purchase THAAD, its main operation would be in the hands of the United States," said Kim Ki-jung, foreign policy adviser to Moon and professor at Seoul's Yonsei University. "So purchasing it would be an impossible option. That was our topic when we were considering the options."
Amazing how Trump is the fucking President of the U.S. and he has zero clue about this. The reaction from South Korea and our own people was basically, "uh, wtf is Trump talking about?"
Are you retards so fucking stupid that you think his generals and the Pentagon wouldnt make him aware of things? Clearly there is an advantage to what hes doing, otherwise they wouldnt bother. Come back to reality you partisan morons!
Advantage? Him looking like an idiot gives him an advantage? The motherfucker just speaks whatever pops into his head. He probably just wasn't paying attention when they were going over it.
Your deflection is noted.
What deflection? Your idiocy is noted.

And..........the OP's title is misleading, because we haven't "given away" the THAAD system. It still belongs to the US, and is operated by US personnel to defend the US and it's allies.

Trump saying we are giving it away is at the very least misleading, at the worst, it's a hyperbolic lie.

Were the past leaders of the USA trying to bankrupt the country? Who in the hell in their right mind GIVES AWAY a billion dollar air defense system!?

South Korea hits back at Trump for demanding $1bn for Thaad missile deployment

If I was Trump this thing would get paid for OR removed.
The carrier groups in the Pacific do not have missile defense systems so if we are to be able to deploy them near Korea, we will need such an anti missile system to protect them.

They are accompanied by guided missile cruisers who have such systems. No need to worry.

Because the S. Koreans do not want it , the US Government wants it to protect their soldiers and its really about China who is very upset about it as well.
I suppose we can just remove our troops if S Korea doesn't want them there.

Its being used by SK to protect their country. I don't give a shit WHO is operating it...

It was deployed to SK by the US to defend US interests (all the US military and civilians in Seoul), as well as defend a US ally (S. Korea).

The system still belongs to us, is operated by us, and if we decide to send it elsewhere, we can.

Easy Solution
Bring our troops and equipment out of South Korea.
We could save big bucks by doing that.
We do not owe South Korea a thing.

We are there for China, remember the South China Sea and the islands they are building.

The fact is that the US has a stake in this. North Korean missiles could threaten the US. It is clearly a deterrence to prevent trouble. Also if a war were to break out, South Koreans make up the majority of troops on the DMZ. They would spill a lot more blood and that should make you happy.

Trump's intemperate remarks have also played a role in the South Korean Presidential elections. It could result in a President that will try to appease NK and we have seen how that has gone.
The US sold N Korea nuclear reactors 2 years before placing them on an "axis of evil" list, from a company Rumsfeld had once sat on the board of directors of. An utterly bipartisan undertaking, the plan was initialized during the Clinton administration and completed under the Bush administration with the US taxpayer providing financial assistance to aid N Korea in wrapping up the deal. Did your television not inform you of this?

Thank you, I found lots of links for this.

Are you stoned? A Carrier Group has loads of self defense missile capability.

Both Articles state the carrier group cannot shoot down NK missiles, but the Navy has since said they would be accompanied by other cruisers that do have that capability.

Yes, the Vinson can't. But there are more than one ship with the Vinson. That's the whole point. And, don't bet your life that there is no way for the Vinsons CAG to do the job.

According to the articles, neither the destroyers nor the cruiser in the group can either, but according to the Navy, there are cruisers in the area that can shoot down NK missiles and they will be accompanying the carrier group.

Actually, if you are still talking about N. Korean missiles, then yeah, you CAN bet your life that there is nothing that the CAG can do. CAG stands for Carrier Air Group (when I was stationed with VFA-131, they were part of CAG 7), and there is nothing in the arsenal of any aviation outfit onboard that carrier that is capable of shooting down a missile.

Now, if you are talking about the CAG handling things differently by bombing the crap out of N. Korea, then yeah, they could put a hurt on his installations.
