He was in a situation that he created, and his go-to solution was to shoot an unarmed child because he was getting his ass kicked in a fight he provoked. One where he received injuries that required no hospitalization and were described as "minor".

Mike Tyson had already committed several felonies by the time he was 15. He began training for his push to the Heavyweight crown when he was 16. He won the title against grown men by the time he was 20. The legal term 'minor' does not mean helpless. At least not in every case.

Once again, Meathead, you don't have to wait till you've received a fatal wound or even a life-threatening wound to feel you are in trouble and thus must defend yourself any way you can. If Zimmerman had shot him several times I would say it was more than self-defense. In this case it was a single shot. That to me says self-defense. Screw what possible rioters would say.
