There is nothing wrong with having a military-grade weapon provided one is trained in its proper handling and capabilities.

There are some non-military, "sporting" type firearms which can do just as much damage as many military weapons. A semi-automatic 12 gauge shotgun loaded with #00 buckshot, for one. A scoped deer rifle, for another.
