Having worked for a criminal law enforcement division in an otherwise civilian agency, I have to say that the hysteria over this is nothing but a media creation.

When Congress enacts criminal penalties for violating laws under the purview of an agency, they need criminal investigators to investigate violations and prepare cases for DOJ to prosecute. Because these people are criminals, that means that the Federal agents have to protect themselves.

Not everything at a military depot is a weapon. For instance, a lot of police dept have bought humvees and ATV without turrets for pennies on the dollar.

Have a friend who a chief officer in Clark County Sheriff's office for several decades, now retired.

I asked him how he would have handled Bundyville. He said he would have come in from the interstate with hardened vehicles, officers in body armor, and choppers. He would have given warnings to put weapons. And any man or woman or child who had a weapon and manifested anything but compliance would have been shot in the head.

Civilian militias do not get to threaten LEO or military. They get to die.
