It is, apparently, good propaganda to refer to automatic weapons when discussing the gun control debate. Either that, or sheer ignorance. The only arsenals of automatic weapons in this country are in the hands of the military and law enforcement agencies.

There is the assumption that all the bullets will hit the assailant.

According to police stats only approx. 17-22% of police officers firing their guns in duty hit their target (no I am not looking for the link).

Shooting at a moving target, in low light situations, makes it very hard to hit the target, especially if you add on the high stress.

What would have happened if she missed all six rounds? Now she is completely defenseless.

Also, as Quantum said what happens if there are two intruders? Now she is out of ammo.

I owned one at one time. My uncle owned hundreds, maybe thousands of them over the years. I have several friends that own full autos now and regularly shop at a store that has about a dozen heavies and submachine guns for sale at any given time.

You too can own a machine gun made before 1986, I believe, if you can pass a background check and pay $200 for a transfer stamp. Warning. Your life will no longer be your own, because every law enforcement agency on earth will know what you own.

Your first mistake was in believing that you "think".

Your second was in believing that we're stupid enough to buy that you "just" want to ban "full arsenals" of a type of weapon that has already been illegal for private ownership for some time now, simply because YOU are stupid enough to say it.

He had cased another house, questioned by homeowner and then ended up in this woman's neighborhood.

<On the way to the hospital, he was asked by a Walton deputy why he broke into the Henderson Ridge Drive home.

&#8220;I was there to steal,&#8221; he told the deputy, according to the sheriff.>

He said he heard her talking on the phone to her husband and then went upstairs.

Elsewhere there was some discussion about why the woman didn't call out --'I have a gun' when he rang the doorbell. In some self defense classes apparently people have been told to do this--there is a legal precedent and I suppose in some situations an intruder might be deterred? In this situation it sounds like the woman made the correct choice.

Others said they had been told to run out a back door but if the backyard is fenced with or the exit would take you back to the front of the house where the intruder and/or accomplices were waiting--that doesn't sound like a good choice either. There is no way LE would have been able to respond in 'seconds'. A woman with 2 nine year old girls v a man with a crowbar--shoot to kill--what else could she do?

He is now on a ventilator with severe organ damage.

Yes, there are those who legally own fully automatic weapons. I'm really surprised you didn't know this. While they are highly regulated, you can still own a fully automatic weapon. My point was that whether they are fully or semi-automatic, there are a lot of people who wonder why some people feel the need to stockpile these type of weapons. I get the fascination. It's like collecting anything, once you get into it you just want more. The difference is that there are a lot of loose cannons out there that shouldn't be legally permitted to buy even a single handgun in the first place, yet some of these people are the ones who have five, ten, or more of these weapons, and when they snap, they are all set to go out in style.

I'm not really against guns period, because there are so many out there, I know we couldn't get them out of the hands of Americans if we tried. When Australia started their ban through a buyback program, 640,000 guns were turned in. In the US, we have close to 300 million of them.

These weak bans don't help because the country is still flooded with guns. We need a very strong ban enforced with overwhelming power where the natonal guard or military goes house to house across the country, and forcefully removes guns from every home. Thats the only way to solve the problem of the rediculous amount of gun violence. Simply arming everyone doesn't solve anything it simply leads to far more innocent people getting killed.

By the way I am a Christian who knows Jesus Christ as my personal Lord, and Savior, and I find it disgusting that so many Christians idolize guns, and put them on the same level as the Bible. Guns are a idol to many people who claim to be Christians.
