This is how it goes so far. The South was mostly Democrat, and the north Republican. The Civil War happened and the Republicans in the north won. Now just what additional power was the New President-elect in 1860 seeking to take from South Carolina in December 1860 when that State seceded. What EXACTLY did Lincoln do when he was just a young boy, or as the President-elect or as the President BEFORE the Southern States began their TRAITOROUS REBELLION?

Wallace also (fun fact time) offered to switch parties to Republican in 1964 in order to be Goldwater's running mate.

Goldwater declined the offer, Wallace continued to rail about "Liberals" and four years later ran with the far-right fringe American Independent Party from California. So the chinks in that armor were already creaking; Wallace could have beat Thurmond to the punch. Such was the impact of LBJ's push for the CRA. He pushed it so hard he broke the Solid South, and he knew it.

But Wallace never did switch That's because, Thurmond's move being the exception*, politicians don't join or switch parties for any kind of philosophy; they switch to get elected. They don't lead the voting base -- they follow it. If the voter base is, say, overwhelmingly Democratic, you're not going to find a lot of success as a Republican. That's why guys like Frank Rizzo and Ray Nagin ran for mayor as Democrats while vocally supporting their own Republicans as soon as they got the office they were after. Because again for the GVWs of the world, whatever his name is, the purpose of a political party is to acquire power. It is not to represent an ideology. That's why you got diametrically opposed governors Talmadge and Arnall in Georgia, yet both were Democrats. It's the label you had to carry to get elected, just as now that label is Republican.

*Thurmond could afford to lead instead of follow on that. He had already won office as a write-in so he knew he could do whatever he wanted and he'd get the votes.
