True, but from my reading chattel slavery as implemented from the 1500's to the 1600's wasn't a concept in Rome.

Slaves were class slaves, people, but subservient to the higher classes, not owned property.

You are right is you have a despised racial element seen as chattel and other ethnic groups seen as a lower class but not despised.

I firmly agree with the comment about Rome, and would extend that to the Alexandrian, Persian, and Hellenic civilizations, where slavery was class not chattel. Class could be, but not always, cruel. Consider the Roman slave quarries and mines and oared ships as an example.
