Correct, but the people don't elect the President. They vote for a President, but their vote is a State issue for electing the 'Electors' of the President. The electoral college is what is used.

These Electors are not even bound to do what the people voted for, but they often do. However, that is still an election that is Statewide. No countrywide election for President is actually held.
