Among the people I know who identify as Conservatives, Republicans, and nonDemocrats who don't support ANY of the Democratic Party alternatives:
1. The people I know who don't support Trump now didn't support him IN THE FIRST PLACE.
So those didn't change, these aren't new people who "used to" back him.
2. Many who didn't like him or didn't support him have changed their
minds and support his economic and foreign policy strategies
3. Very few changed their minds from pro-Democrat/Hillary to pro-Trump or pro-GOP
or vice versa from pro-GOP/Trump to pro-Democrat given the choices.
The ones who changed mostly go independent.
They drop the GOP and go independent.
Or they leave the Dems and go Green or independent.

As for your focus on "3 million who voted against Trump"
If the voters had been using a system of POPULAR voting to decide the winner,
how many of the Independent voters who split votes on third parties
(or who ABSTAINED and STAYED HOME) would have added their votes
to TRUMP to prevent Clinton from getting elected?

How are you going to count the people who didn't bother voting
in states that already had their Electoral College Votes decided?

How are you going to count the people who WOULD have voted
for Trump (or Clinton) if it was going to be based on Popular instead of
Electoral Votes?

You do realize the votes might be even more in favor of Trump (instead of diverted
to third parties) had there been a risk that Clinton would win based on popular vote.

One of the advantages of the Electoral College system,
it also allows third party movements room to grow in support and development.

nat4900 if all we had was the popular vote,
the Democrats would use that to squelch any dissenting third parties
out of fear of splitting the vote and giving the win to Conservatives.
So there would be no check on the Democrats, and the
movements such as green jobs and clean energy wouldn't get pushed
as they did with third parties creating those followings and pressuring others to adopt.
