A spokeswoman for Governor Robert Bentley told the Montgomery Advertiser on Wednesday that he did not want the flag to be a "distraction".

It is the latest push to remove the banner since the murder of nine parishioners at a historical black church in South Carolina last week

The suspect, Dylann Roof, has appeared in many photos holding the flag.

Meanwhile, debate has been revived in Mississippi over a smaller version of the rebel flag within the current state flag. Mississippi's House Speaker has called for its removal.
