All inmates in NYS prisons to get free tablets

jan 31 - 2018 - Under a new state contract, all inmates in New York State prisons will receive free tablets.

The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) is partnering with JPay, a company that specializes in inmate and corrections-related services. JPay is providing the tablets at no cost to the state or inmates, and DOCCS is not taking commissions for the tablets.

The tablets will be preloaded with educational content and DOCCS plans to make additional services available through the tablets, such as Prison Rape Elimination Act reporting, Grievance filing, and the potential for placing commissary orders.

According to DOCCS, JPay will get money from transactions that happen via the tablets (ebooks, music, videos). The tablets are only part of a larger contract with JPay who are also handling commissary and care packages sent from families to inmates.

The tablets will not be able to connect to the internet, but inmates will be able to use the tablets to purchase music, e-books, videos, and other entertainment. There will also be controlled kiosks where inmates can plug their tablet in to send emails to an approved list of recipients. Inmates will only have supervised access to the kiosks at scheduled times.

And what is worse is that conservatives think that you can give a guy a 5 year sentence in a steel cage and he'll pop out on the other side happy go lucky and ready to rock and roll.

No, he went in for a non violent computer crime and came out a violent criminal. Now you've created a problem rather than solved one. He has no money, no house, no job, nothing. And then you use the fact that he'll probably return to prison because he has nowhere to go as the reason to keep him locked up longer in the first place.

I'm not blaming capitalist at all for the high number we have locked away. The reason for these prisoners getting the "free" tablets is because JPAY found a way to make big bucks off this captive audience (I like puns too). They charge a hefty fee for money transfers to inmates and then provide the means to sell them music and apps they can download. Now that's capitalism at work.

Still, consider, black men make up about 7% of the population but account for the majority of murders.
