However, said Haaretz, the resistance surprised everyone by its ability to be involved in a continuous exchange of fire that lasted for 48 hours, using new weapons that damaged Israeli military equipment. The fighters demonstrated their successful coordination and cooperation during the operation.

The newspaper also pointed out that the Palestinians were able to carry out resistance attacks at the same time that the offensive was taking place. This was a reference to an attack near the illegal settlement of Kedumim in the occupied West Bank, in which an Israeli soldier was killed, and another attack in Tel Aviv which wounded eight people.

Three Israelis have been wounded in a shooting outside the occupied West Bank settlement of Tekoa, according to the Israeli army and emergency services.

A 35-year-old man was left in serious but stable condition, while two girls - a nine-year-old and 14-year-old - suffered mild injuries from shrapnel.

Israeli media said the three were from the nearby Nokdim settlement and were shot at while driving in their car.

The army said the attacker was in a car when they fired, and search was underway for the perpetrator and possible collaborators.

The attack comes amid an increase settler attacks and military raids on Palestinian cities, the latest of which targeted the Jenin refugee camp on 3 July.

Aqil Awawdeh's family said that forces from the Palestinian Preventive Security Service raided his workplace in Ramallah on Thursday afternoon, arrested him and transferred him to an unknown destination.

The arrest came after he published a short video disputing a claim made by the spokesperson of the Palestinian security services that there were no political detainees in their prisons.

The group condemned the arrest of activists, as well as the PA's Cybercrime Law which they said had effectively legalised repression of public freedoms and constitutional rights.

According to the group, the law violates the Palestinian Basic Law and international human rights standards, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Legal experts have said that Israel's military operation in Jenin earlier this month, which killed 12 Palestinians and wounded 100 others, fits into the parameters of war crimes under the Geneva Conventions.

Susan Akram, a clinical professor at Boston University's School of Law, said the raid on Jenin clearly amounts to war crimes for a number of reasons, including intentionally attacking a civilian population and attacking medical units.

"The Geneva Conventions include as war crimes during occupation, willful killings, willfully causing great suffering to an occupied population and extensive destruction of property not justified by military necessity," Akram said during a webinar on Thursday hosted by the Arab Center Washington, DC.

"There's no doubt that what Israel carried out in Jenin constitutes war crimes."

Tunnels under Jenin camp: How Palestinian fighters fooled Israel

Despite the widespread damage to homes and roads caused by Israeli forces during the two-day assault, many residents said they were happy to see fighters roaming the streets of the camp the next morning.

Another resident, Amany Abdullah*, said: “We were very afraid for our fighters. But thank God, they are all safe.”

Israel to allow Palestinian Americans entry, wants US visa waiver

Americans living in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, to enter the country in a bid to get visa-free travel for Israelis to the US.

The change was introduced on Thursday, after US Ambassador Thomas Nides and Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who is currently visiting the US, signed a “reciprocity agreement” on the issue a day earlier, according to an Israeli statement.

“The full implementation of the program will apply to any US citizen, including those with dual citizenship, American residents of Judea and Samaria [the occupied West Bank] and American residents of the Gaza Strip,” the statement said.

The US has previously prevented Israel from joining its Visa Waiver Program (VWP), citing its differential treatment of some US citizens.

Israel Wants France to Help Ease Tensions with Hezbollah in Lebanon

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna told her Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen on Wednesday that it is important for Israel to end “all unilateral measures likely to fuel tensions” with the Palestinians, according to a statement issued by the French Foreign Ministry.

Colonna also “stressed the need to end the policy of settlement activity, which is illegal under international law and undermines the prospects of peace.”

In the meeting, sources said Israel asked France to help ensure no war erupts between Tel Aviv and Lebanon’s Hezbollah group.

“I asked my friend, Foreign Minister Colonna, to exercise France’s influence in Lebanon in order to help resolve the tensions efficiently and quickly,” Cohen said.
