I guess the United States was once a great nation - if you ever was a great nation at all and not only a big, fat nation - when you was a nation full of citizens, who had in very most cases a migration background and your parents and/or grandparents were also native speakers of other languages. You lost this heritage and today you are for example not even able to send an ambassador to Germany, who is able to speak German, although English is only one of the Germanic languages and about 1/3-2/5 of your citizens have a German ancestor.
