And here it comes...

Bald-faced lie from the article said:
“You have a marketplace where there is competition,” she said, “and people can shop for the plan that best meets their needs in terms of quality and price.”

ACA dictates what plans must cover. It specifically prevents people from shopping for plans that best meet their needs.

Maternity Care !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All employer provided health insurance plans in my entire lifetime have covered maternity...even ALL of my husband's employer plans have had the coverage....

There has NEVER, EVER been a choice as an employee, male or female, to buy in to an insurance plan without maternity coverage at our various employers...

Your entire lifetime, and mine, is relatively short. But in that time, we've seen what a disaster the status quo has been regarding health insurance. What we need, more than anything, is the freedom to radically change the utterly failed approach of the "group plan". But that kind of change will de-throne the vested interests in business and government, all of whom aren't eager to give up power. So we have a law that forces us to carry on with the same idiocy. And it will be our undoing.

And since most people do get their insurance through their employers, it seems to me, that maternity coverage would not be a reason for healthcare insurance to go up? Same with BC pills or any birth control coverage, all my employee plans the past 25 years have covered it, even for my husband's plans at his work.... So that too should not have made insurance to go up.

- note, BEFORE THOSE 25 years, BC pills etc, were not covered by our employer plans.

so, I am thinking it is preexisting condition coverage and no lifetime caps that is truly what has made the price rise some? And these are the two changes that most of us agree with....?

Always had the option to not have maternity care.

seriously??? Through an employer insurance program??? I'm sorry, but I find that hard to believe...

What was interesting was that some employer plans covered vasectomies, but not tubal ligations. And as soon as Viagra et al. came on the market, they were scrambling to cover those, but not necessarily BC or HRT.

My guess is the people squalling about maternity coverage never bothered reading the policies their employers offered, but someone on TalkRadio tipped them off to the OUTRAGE!!!!!!

And I do agree with you that the greater likelihood for the premium increases is probably "Oh, damn. You mean we can't deny or cap people with cancer anymore? Well, that's no fair! We'll show them! Raise the premiums on everybody!"

The problem is that individual plans are now required to cover it as well.

the problem began nearly a century ago, when congress met the will of employers/businesses, of wanting health care coverage for their employees, a tax deductible expense.... we as a Nation have been "subsidizing" health care, ever since imo...

Agreed. And the way to undo the problem is to remove the policies that caused it. Doubling down on stupid won't help.

The middle isn't so good either.

Especially the more you move away from local elections.

I keep asking what it cost to keep us healthy. If you take that and divided it out over the population....you'd know the average cost of care.

You really can't run from that number.

Unless you can figure out what we are spending on that we should not be (30% of total costs are end of life care....most physicians I know say it's stupid......we back end load the system when that money should be used to provide better care when it will make more of a difference....if that means not giving chemo to stage 4 lung cancer patients....so be it).

I keep asking what it cost to keep us healthy. If you take that and divided it out over the population....you'd know the average cost of care.

The total, or average, costs of health care only matter from the perspective of how much "we" spend on health care, and that only matters to the extent that health care costs are socialized. Most unreasonable prices and costs associated with health care are directly related to the fact that the person racking up the bills isn't paying them.

When it comes to health care costs that aren't socialized I don't really care how much "we" spend on health care. You can spend as much as you like. I'll spend according to my preferences.

I don't want a government preoccupied with cutting costs. If something is important enough that we need a law to enforce it, costs should be a secondary concern at best. For example, if we task the government with protecting us from foreign invaders, I want them to do whatever is necessary to keep the invaders out, and tax us to pay for it. Likewise, IF it's the responsibility of government to take care of our health, they should do whatever is necessary to accomplish that goal, and tax us to pay for it. And that's why I see health care as a wild inappropriate concern for government. Keeping people healthy is a bottomless cup (how healthy), and it always fails in the end.

With the oil price crash, I'm looking at a very poor year for 2015. I went ahead and signed up for the tit, and it covers $600/month of the $900+ premium. The drawback is that it's an especially suck-ass policy.

What is a suck ass policy? One that has a high deductible? Unless you are really sick, it makes sense to go with a high deductible plan. I have cirrhosis of the liver, but even with that, my out of pocket costs are only around $2000 per year. My plan costs $375 per month, so I'm covered if things should go bad. It used to be that the only health insurance plan you could purchase privately was major medical. Everything else you paid out of pocket. A big reason healthcare insurance costs have gone through the roof is that they tried to cover everything.

I agree with you that high-deductible plans make the most sense. But now they cost as much as low-deductible plans did before. That's the problem.
