Another American water scandal

Remember that only Republicans know how to govern..They claim to hate the govt. until they need money or a force to change public policy.
Trump and his acolytes were very keen to release business from the pain of looking after the environment. The regulatory environment seems to be an invitation to pollute. More execs should go to jail for this sort of behaviour.
Phosphates are not unique to areas of Florida. And pollution is different then global climate change crap. This will get dealt with at some point. But no one has an issue eating fruits and vegetables grown and products made from this state.

If you eat orange's you have to accept polluting the environment?

If you don't want your oranges costing $25 a pound you have to accept industrial farming techniques.

But we don't have to accept what we have here. If you make a mess, clean it up, don't close up and leave it for others.

How long has this stuff been there?

No idea but since the company seems to no longer be in business it's been too long.

Reading more on the waste in question and it seems to be just a nutrient issue, and a minor pH issue. The real damage potential isn't from the quality of the water but the quantity.

Then you didn't read it. There is no safe level of radioactive.

Yes, there are safe levels of radioactive, or chest x-rays and flying on an airplane wouldn't be "safe".

The article I read reported pH, phosphate and nitrogen levels as the problem.

There is when the normal background radiation level is equal or higher, as in this case.

When the fertilizer company was running, they had permits, so then it was not polluting according to the standards of the time. But fertilizer companies likely are not much of a threat.

It looks like they were well warned about the dangers. Apparently, it is "costly" to treat the water so it looks like people will have to die.
Of course, it isn't only in the U.S. or with "capitalism" that human life takes second place to economics and/or ideology.
For some reason we expect the US to have higher standards than Brazil or other third world shitholes.
This isn't really about the U.S.; it is about a state.

Yes it's a problem that we allow this at all.

Seems to be a national thing. Clean water should be a given.

"In addition to high concentrations of radioactive materials, phosphogypsum and processed wastewater can also contain carcinogens and heavy toxic metals," the center said in a statement on Saturday. "For every ton of phosphoric acid produced, the fertilizer industry creates 5 tons of radioactive phosphogypsum waste, which is stored in mountainous stacks hundreds of acres wide and hundreds of feet tall."

Manatee County Commissioner Vanessa Baugh said in a statement Saturday that the "public must heed that notice to avoid harm."

Toxic wastewater reservoir on verge of collapse in Florida could cause "catastrophic event"

Seems to me that this stuff shouldn't be produced at all. "Mountains of waste".

The pollution is actually much more pathological: the cocaine that Bill Clinton snorted was delivered from planes landing at those (somewhat safe) Florida phosphate beds near Lakeland. Not only Clinton’s housing catastrophe and stupid crotch-clownism, but also CIA complicity in such cocaine traffic, whose puppet is now in the White House.

Yep, a classic example of that was Abbott in Texas after the recent freeze disaster. He blamed it on solar and in the same breath, demanded money from the Feds to cover for his own ineptitude.

It does appear that the corporations can foul up the environment to their hearts content. Why is public money needed to clear up this mess ?

Well, Governor Trumpy Bear was very reassuring. Who doesn't love drinking saltwater and storm runoff? :rolleyes-41:

On Sunday Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said the water was not radioactive and was "primarily saltwater" from a dredging project mixed with "legacy process water and storm water runoff".

Can you provide quotes to support your statement about being keen to release business......

Please.......

For once.

Why didn't the company deal with the wastes? Just allow them to walk away? It doesn't cost much to deal with wastes properly. If I were one of those people who may be affected I'd be on the news just belittling everyone involved. And there's nothing anybody could do about it.

The sloth of drug addiction is intimate with the sloth of the cocksucking Florida EPA.
