North America's ice age started 30-50 million years ago when North America was in the same location that Greenland is now. Once North America passed the "closest to the pole" position, it ceased moving NW and started moving SW, all on the same vector on the same sphere.
We're back to your "North America was covered with ice for the last 30-50 million years
until, 20,000 years ago or so, North America finally moved far enough away from the North Pole to thaw"?
Is that correct?
Indeed, the 600 miles from the pole issue works both ways.
