It may not be perfect but the checks and balances that the Federal Government has is among the best in the world.

The EC began because in the 1700's it was not possible to transfer and count votes in all areas. The few "urban" areas were all in the NE. We could reach that point again unless election office are funded correctly. The Senate was comprised that way to give power to less populous states.

There are reasons for this, but it's beyond you. You also didn't get to elect your Senators until Wilson, but that's because they represent your STATE. But again this is beyond your ability to grasp.
