He is a "friendly adversary". Meaning we are at odds with each other but also are forced to deal with each other since we're both first world powerful nations.

Being an adversary means he wants our weakest president, the most predictable, and the most easily manipulated president. It makes us less of a threat to them.

I think Putin relates to Trump's strength, determination, forthrightness, courage, and big balls. But that's also not something he wants in a person who is a civil ally with based purely on easily changeable circumstances. Russia can very easily and very quickly change from an enemy to an ally or vice versa and Putin knows this. Right now he is sitting between the two. If Putin were slip into enemy status who would he have running America? The weak or the strong?
