AOC Flunks Economics 101

Marc Thiessen: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an economic illiterate -- And that's bad news for America

"The left complains that conservatives are "obsessing" over Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Well, there is a reason for that: Ocasio-Cortez is driving the agenda of today's Democratic Party -- and her economic illiteracy is dangerous.

Case in point: Last week, Ocasio-Cortez celebrated the tanking of a deal negotiated by her fellow Democrats in which Amazonpromised to build a new headquarters in Long Island City, New York, right next to her congressional district. Amazon's departure cost the city between 25,000 and 40,000 new jobs. Forget the tech workers whom Amazon would have employed. Gone are all the unionized construction jobs to build the headquarters, as well as thousands of jobs created by all the small businesses -- restaurants, bodegas, dry cleaners and food carts -- that were preparing to open or expand to serve Amazon employees. They are devastated by Amazon's withdrawal.

Ocasio-Cortez was not disturbed at all. "We were subsidizing those jobs," she said. "Frankly, if we were willing to give away $3 billion for this deal, we could invest those $3 billion in our district, ourselves, if we wanted to. We could hire out more teachers. We can fix our subways. We can put a lot of people to work for that amount of money if we wanted to."

No, you can't. Ocasio-Cortez does not seem to realize that New York does not have $3 billion in cash sitting around waiting to be spent on her socialist dreams. The subsidies to Amazon were tax incentives, not cash payouts. It is Amazon's money, which New York agreed to make tax-exempt, so the company would invest it in building its new headquarters, hiring new workers and generating tens of billions in new tax revenue.

Doesn't she have a degree in economics??

If so some fool of a professor sure did the State of NY a disservice. She has no knowledge of economics at all.

What a dingbat.

Why do you echo others when you don't have a clue? Do you need attention? Get a puppy.

Already have one and he's smarter than you.

I don't echo anyone. Anyone can see she knows nothing about economics.

Guess you're a dingbat just like her.

next time we give someone $500 in welfare and food stamps cause they're in their 18th month of "joblessness" let me know how many jobs they put into the economy again.

Wait...$500 for someone with no job "horrifies" you...but 3 BILLION for the richest corporation in the world...is great

Oh...

Government making special deals with private business is not capitalism. Cronyism.
The existence of private business is captalism just as it's purpose is to make capital. I am quite sure you do not understand what cronyism is. You may even be stupider than AOC.
Crony capitalism is an economy in which businesses thrive not as a result of risk, but rather as a return on money amassed through a nexus between a business class and the political class. This is done using state power to crush genuine competition in handing out permits, government grants, special tax breaks, or other forms of state intervention

You think special tax incentives is good capitalism? You fail economics.

In the sense that it's a government entity interacting with the private sector, yes.

New York and Amazon were negotiating a business deal. New York was offering Amazon something it wanted - favorable tax incentives - for something New York wanted - a big new employer with lots of new jobs and revenue. New York got stupid and forgot that they were not sitting in the driver's seat on the negotiation, and that there are a lot of other cities competing to make that deal with Amazon.

Sounds like capitalism to me.

Government making special deals with private business is not capitalism. Cronyism.

Agreed. And Corporatism, aka, fascism.

"Influencing" is certainly a vague term. The Democratic Socialist influenced business in Venezuela just as Trump influenced business in the US albeit in a very different way.

Amazon would have been exempted from $3 billion in taxes.

How long would it take for 25,000 low paid workers to make up the difference from their income taxes?

A loooooooong time.

Tax expenditures are a fucking disaster for this country. They are costing the federal government $1.4 trillion a year. This results in higher federal tax rates and massive deficits.

It's tards like you, easyt, who are idiots when it comes to economics.
Amazon would have paid $24 billion in taxes instead of $27 billion. How long will it take the taxpayers of New York to make up that difference? The answer is: forever, because they aren't getting any new source of tax revenue.

It's about good jobs not taxes. Why are private sector jobs always a freaking glass half empty to socialist clowns? You can bet your ass(ets) that NYS would have received a windfall in taxes anyway. It boils down to the incredible conclusion that racist leftie clowns apparently think that the only good jobs are government jobs even though the government never made a freaking dime that wasn't confiscated.

There's no $3 billion in actual reality...She made a fool of herself, and is too arrogant to recognize it.
She didn’t support special tax incentives. That’s a good thing.
She does support it. Just not with amazon.

Uh, no. I'm very sorry that it's news to you that city governments all over the nation routinely do business with and make business deals with private companies. Don't get too attached to joyfully throwing around conservative buzzwords with no clue about or concern for what they actually mean.

Leftists sure hate "welfare" . . . when it's given to someone who's actually useful.

No, I think the level to which NYC thought they were going to tell Amazon how to run their business, as though Amazon needed them more than they needed Amazon, was extremely bad capitalism, and bad government. Amazon apparently thought so, too, which is why NY has now failed at one of the primary functions of city government.

The way MOST cities go about it, making deals to encourage new businesses to open in their city that actually WORK, is a pretty standard feature of capitalism, yeah.

Once again, the stupid Russian is lying:

AOC graduated cum laude from Boston University's College of Arts and Sciences in 2011, majoring in international relations and economics. She won second prize in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with a microbiology research project on the effect of antioxidants on the lifespan of the nematode C. elegans.

Which puts her miles ahead of Donald Trump who never studied economics at all, and graduated from Wharton with no academic distinctions whatsoever. AOC won academic awards throughout her student career.
