Marc Thiessen: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an economic illiterate -- And that's bad news for America

"The left complains that conservatives are "obsessing" over Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Well, there is a reason for that: Ocasio-Cortez is driving the agenda of today's Democratic Party -- and her economic illiteracy is dangerous.

Case in point: Last week, Ocasio-Cortez celebrated the tanking of a deal negotiated by her fellow Democrats in which Amazonpromised to build a new headquarters in Long Island City, New York, right next to her congressional district. Amazon's departure cost the city between 25,000 and 40,000 new jobs. Forget the tech workers whom Amazon would have employed. Gone are all the unionized construction jobs to build the headquarters, as well as thousands of jobs created by all the small businesses -- restaurants, bodegas, dry cleaners and food carts -- that were preparing to open or expand to serve Amazon employees. They are devastated by Amazon's withdrawal.

Ocasio-Cortez was not disturbed at all. "We were subsidizing those jobs," she said. "Frankly, if we were willing to give away $3 billion for this deal, we could invest those $3 billion in our district, ourselves, if we wanted to. We could hire out more teachers. We can fix our subways. We can put a lot of people to work for that amount of money if we wanted to."

No, you can't. Ocasio-Cortez does not seem to realize that New York does not have $3 billion in cash sitting around waiting to be spent on her socialist dreams. The subsidies to Amazon were tax incentives, not cash payouts. It is Amazon's money, which New York agreed to make tax-exempt, so the company would invest it in building its new headquarters, hiring new workers and generating tens of billions in new tax revenue.
"

You can't fix her Socialist type of 'stupid'.

So what state is going to take Amazon and not make them pay taxes? It's a race to the bottom.

So ny was going to raise the tax rate of individuals because they were giving amazon a tax break? Lol

Amazon would have been exempted from $3 billion in taxes.

How long would it take for 25,000 low paid workers to make up the difference from their income taxes?

A loooooooong time.

Tax expenditures are a fucking disaster for this country. They are costing the federal government $1.4 trillion a year. This results in higher federal tax rates and massive deficits.

It's tards like you, easyt, who are idiots when it comes to economics.
You should know where you stand by the people giving you props for this comment (commie).

YOU are an economics dumbass if you believe that it's a bad thing to give a tax break to a company to come in, build, boost your economy, and give you 25000 more jobs.

Remember, those would be tax dollars New York would otherwise not get ANYWAY if Amazon did not move there. So, why the FUCK would New York need to "make up" for the $3 Billion in tax dollars when NY was not entitled to get them the first place?

YOU are apparently the economics idiot. But, I will give you a chance to explain yourself or revise you comments.

Doesn't she have a degree in economics??

If so some fool of a professor sure did the State of NY a disservice. She has no knowledge of economics at all.

What a dingbat.
What "cracks me up" is that AOC has begun a conversation, actually a number of conversations. And instead of engaging in those conversations...Republicans can only engage in ad hominem attacks.

We're talking about a first term Congress person who has no real power other than the power of her ideas...and those ideas TERRIFY Republicans

They should terrify every thing person. They are great ideals, but not serious ideas.

AOC was right.

Amazon was being exempted from $3 billion in taxes. If Amazon paid those taxes instead, that $3 billion could have been used for the purposes AOC described.

All caught up now, retards?

And now Amazon will not pay any new taxes at all. How is New York better off?

Wrong again asshole. The $3 billion is infrastructure costs for building the campus. Instead of paying these costs, the City of New York would let Amazon off the hook for them, which means that the people who live in that Borough would have that $3 billion added to their taxes to pay for the roadways, sewer lines, power lines, storm sewers, and all of the infrastructure spending needed to not only accommodate a campus where 25,000 people work, but the transportation infrastructure, roadways, subways and other public transit to get them to and from work.

This idea that US cities should compete for jobs and large profitable corporations is just lunacy on the hoof. Tax breaks for profitable corporations paid for by low income people, is nuts.

I don't mind if the go from a good blue state with a lot of good schools, police and people to hire and they move to a redneck state where the hicks aren't so bright. If that's who they want to hire I'm ok with that. Just don't go to China or Mexico right?

I am not kidding. If Kentucky wants to take corporations in and have those corporations pay no taxes, I'm ok with that. But if they want to do business in Michigan they have to pay their fair share.
