AOC Flunks Economics 101

Marc Thiessen: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an economic illiterate -- And that's bad news for America

"The left complains that conservatives are "obsessing" over Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Well, there is a reason for that: Ocasio-Cortez is driving the agenda of today's Democratic Party -- and her economic illiteracy is dangerous.

Case in point: Last week, Ocasio-Cortez celebrated the tanking of a deal negotiated by her fellow Democrats in which Amazonpromised to build a new headquarters in Long Island City, New York, right next to her congressional district. Amazon's departure cost the city between 25,000 and 40,000 new jobs. Forget the tech workers whom Amazon would have employed. Gone are all the unionized construction jobs to build the headquarters, as well as thousands of jobs created by all the small businesses -- restaurants, bodegas, dry cleaners and food carts -- that were preparing to open or expand to serve Amazon employees. They are devastated by Amazon's withdrawal.

Ocasio-Cortez was not disturbed at all. "We were subsidizing those jobs," she said. "Frankly, if we were willing to give away $3 billion for this deal, we could invest those $3 billion in our district, ourselves, if we wanted to. We could hire out more teachers. We can fix our subways. We can put a lot of people to work for that amount of money if we wanted to."

No, you can't. Ocasio-Cortez does not seem to realize that New York does not have $3 billion in cash sitting around waiting to be spent on her socialist dreams. The subsidies to Amazon were tax incentives, not cash payouts. It is Amazon's money, which New York agreed to make tax-exempt, so the company would invest it in building its new headquarters, hiring new workers and generating tens of billions in new tax revenue.
"

You can't fix her Socialist type of 'stupid'.

.
You think special tax incentives is good capitalism? You fail economics.
That's not the root of Occasional Cortex's economic illiteracy.

There's no $3 billion in actual reality...She made a fool of herself, and is too arrogant to recognize it.

Wrong again asshole. The $3 billion is infrastructure costs for building the campus. Instead of paying these costs, the City of New York would let Amazon off the hook for them, which means that the people who live in that Borough would have that $3 billion added to their taxes to pay for the roadways, sewer lines, power lines, storm sewers, and all of the infrastructure spending needed to not only accommodate a campus where 25,000 people work, but the transportation infrastructure, roadways, subways and other public transit to get them to and from work.

This idea that US cities should compete for jobs and large profitable corporations is just lunacy on the hoof. Tax breaks for profitable corporations paid for by low income people, is nuts.

Now we still have the same bloated Union payroll and NO AMAZON.

This is how you "Progressive" Fuckers destroy every single fucking country that's stupid enough to let you try things your way

There is no union payroll involved in the installation of infrastructure. Those are tendered contracts and the work is completed by construction companies, and normally paid for by the developer - in this case Amazon. That $3 billion was being shifted to the borough residents, who, unless they're working for Amazon get exactly $0 of that money back.

My God, you get more ignorant and more convinced of the "brilliance" of your ignorance with every word.

The $3 billion was NOT "infrastructure costs". Even Occasional Cortex has said they were tax breaks. Nor does NYC have the ability to "let Amazon off the hook" for paying for items and services they purchase. NYC did offer a capital grant as essentially a bribe to get Amazon to use union labor, but that was their idea, not Amazon's.

Only a dementia-ridden, government-spoonfed nutcase like you would think that there's something bad and outrageous about city taxes going for roads, sewers, and public transportation to enable its residents to get to jobs, rather than private employers building all that stuff for the "privilege" of existing and employing people. No wonder your country is a second-tier nothing, if your fellow citizens are as pig-stupid as you are.

The idea that competition is "nuts" is what's actually nuts.

She's right. If corporations don't have to pay taxes guess who will have to pay more? You and me.

So what state is going to take Amazon and not make them pay taxes? It's a race to the bottom.
So ny was going to raise the tax rate of individuals because they were giving amazon a tax break? Lol

This might help you

in May of 2001 Bush administration Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill suggested there should be no corporate income tax whatsoever. This was the opening salvo in a very real war to have working people bear all the costs of the commons and governance, while the wealthy corporate elite derive most of its benefits.

As Cato Institute adjunct scholar Richard W. Rahn noted in Rev. Moon's Washington Times, "The idea and practice of the corporate income tax has been dying slowly for the last two decades."

The December 1, 2004 Washington Times article, titled "End Corporate Income Tax," reflects a powerful and growing movement not just in the United States but across the world.

Nobles Need Not Pay Taxes

Maybe in 12 years another Trump type of Republican will come along and admit that corporations aren't paying their fair share. Until then I don't expect Republicans to admit that this is true. They were only willing to admit it when Obama was president and it was GE who we found out wasn't paying taxes. So Republicans blamed Obama for it. But the fact is, you really don't want GE or Amazon to pay any taxes.

Jobs were a good thing for 250 years until the crazy angry left created a convoluted tax scenario where job creation is bad. Hell, we even had to live through the Clinton cliche of "it's the economy , stupid" during the 90's but the socialist/democratic revolution flipped on a dime. Racist democrats were content that young Black men were dependent on government handouts while Black unemployment was in double digits. The ironic thing is that the Trump administration created more jobs for Black men than anytime in the last hundred years and racist democrats are outraged.

And governent giving cash payments to business? Think that gives a government created advantage over competition? Think hard.
Which one of Amazon's competitors is moving to NYC? Think hard.

This is why you have no business discussing business. You don't understand it. That's also why you have not business discussing economics in general.

How familiar are you with NYC real estate?

Obviously. It should be between private companies. Government shouldn’t be picking who wins and loses.
How did government pick a winner here?

If BOTH Amazon and Wayfair (competitors) were moving to NYC, and NYC only gave moving cost incentives to Amazon, you would have a point.

If NYC gave Amazon those incentives and did not give them to, say, Starbucks, it's not giving an competitive advantage.

Almost everyone competes with amazon. Lots of competitors in NY. Why should they have a government created disadvantage?

You are seriously retarded. "There is no union payroll with contruction companies." What the hell are you smoking? And while the company would be financially responsible for paying for construction on their property, they are not "normally" responsible for paying for roadways and sewer and power lines. Dumbass.

As usual, you read something that was far beyond your thinking levels, about a country you know nothing about, and you spewed back gibberish. Seriously, you would be doing everyone a favor if you just realized three things:

1) You're a drooling moron with a room-temp IQ;
2) You know less about America than you do about everything else in the world, which is already nothing;
3) The greatest contribution you could ever make to these conversations is to not say anything, or even be around.

Once again, the stupid Russian is lying:

AOC graduated cum laude from Boston University's College of Arts and Sciences in 2011, majoring in international relations and economics. She won second prize in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with a microbiology research project on the effect of antioxidants on the lifespan of the nematode C. elegans.

Which puts her miles ahead of Donald Trump who never studied economics at all, and graduated from Wharton with no academic distinctions whatsoever. AOC won academic awards throughout her student career.

With all those academic accolades, why does she say such dumb economic things? IOW, the proof of the education lies in what you do with it, and by all appearances, she's not doing all that much.
