The new "B" word to be banned?

Bitch? Nope
Boobs? Nope

The word which hurts girls is "Bossy".

I recall using the word, but it was used towards anyone, not just girls.

Any thoughts anyone?

I second the motion to ban the word, ban.
I'm sick of political correctness. I say what I please and if someone doesn't like it, they can put it where the sun doesn't shine.

Okay Mac1958, perhaps you have the right idea. If I'm to go along with banning:
We need to ban the words, religion and god/allah. We'll just refer to religion as the "r" word and in the case of referring to a deity, the "g" or "a" word. I find anything referring to religion or what they falsely stand for as offensive. The words broccolli, brussel sprouts and cauliflower are offensive sounding as well as offensively tasting to me, we should ban them, perhaps go so far as to deny their existence.
The word "human" is specist. Change it to bipedal organism.
This is a good start.

If being tough enough to survive the horrors of being called Bossy makes for the kinds of women leaders we've seen in business why would you want to lower the standards and make less capable women leaders?

If they can't take being called the B word maybe they weren't cut out to be a leader in the first place.

You gain important skills at that stage of personal development and being able to avoid that challenge does the future leaders no favors.

It does America no favors.

Yes, I recall thinking this the moment I heard the story on the news tonight.

Yup.

The problem, though, is that there are many words that start with "r" or "a" or "c" or "b" that might offend someone, and using the wrong letter may offend someone. Holy crap, then all hell would break loose and someone would probably try to get you fired.

So here's my plan: I think we should make it official and have the government launch a web site that keeps us up to date on words we are not allowed to say. That way we could all just stop there in the morning, study up, and know that we will probably not offend anyone during the next 24 hour period.

If we can trust anyone to know which words are acceptable to use in daily discourse, it is Our Great & Glorious Leaders In Central Planning.

We keep a picture of them on the wall in our living room, and my family & I bow down to them daily in loving reverence.

I think the idea to empower our girls is a good one - I would only hope they don't leave their brothers behind.

And of course this good idea is being attacked at it's weakest and most irrelevant point.

There's a term for that, a specific logical fallacy...http://www.iep.utm.edu/fallacy/#Quibbling

Quibbling
We quibble when we complain about a minor point and falsely believe that this complaint somehow undermines the main point. To avoid this error, the logical reasoner will not make a mountain out of a mole hill nor take people too literally. Logic Chopping is a kind of quibbling.

Example:

I’ve found typographical errors in your poem, so the poem is neither inspired nor perceptive.

or - I don't like the whole point of the PSA, so the word "ban," will be harped upon to bury the main point of the PSA in a thread full of bullshit. :eusa_whistle:

Nah, if the campaign was just about empowering girls there would be no issue.

Will the next word to ban be "headstrong". Perhaps strong-willed?

The term bossy is not used uniquely for girls, "bossiness" connotes rudeness and a disregard for others. A bossy person wants his or her way and will do whatever it takes to get it. People tell their children not to be bossy for a reason, so they show respect in a leadership role, not one where "it's my way or the highway"

Girls and boys should be encouraged to assert themselves but also have friends and play well with others, but not in a manner where it's overbearing or mean.

John Rohn said it best: "The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.”

So there is nothing wrong with telling our children how to be a great leader and not one who is "bossy" with a disregard for others.

Meh. I've never heard of men being called bossy.

In fact, I can't think of a single denigrating term for white anglo-saxon protestant male.

You never heard of a boy being called bossy? We are talking kids here, not men. Heck, all the time on the playground we would always say to everyone playing- stop bossing me around, stop being bossy. It was used all the time when I was growing up. I hear my neighbor telling her little boy twins not to be bossy to one another.

As far as men there are plenty of nasty terms for them. But this thread is a about the term bossy and it's use with children.

Lets just watch what we say, what is wrong with that? Historically the people of Germany watched what they said in public and private, while the Socialist controlled Germany. Further the same can be said about Russia, people were always cautious as to what they said.

I see no problem with governments banning words and people being silenced, what is the harm?

No. Boys don't get called bossy. There's a difference, you are apparently missing, between being called bossy, and being told you are acting bossy, or bossing someone around. Rather like being told you are bad, instead of having done something bad.

I REALLY gotta stop getting sucked in when people can't hear, have no intention of hearing, and frankly just feel an overwhelming need to be right and have the last word.

Cya!
