Biden chides GOP for 'trying to hide the truth' about Black history in marking Bloody Sunday

‘President Biden on Sunday called out Republicans for efforts to limit teaching parts of Black history as he marked the 58th anniversary of Bloody Sunday.

“History matters,” Biden said at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. “The truth matters, notwithstanding what the other team is trying to hide. They’re trying to hide the truth.”

Biden highlighted the importance of teaching African American studies, which comes amid a growing debate over Republicans pushing to prevent the teaching of certain subject matters such as African American studies in schools.

“No matter how hard some people try, we can’t just choose to learn what we want to know but not what we should know. We should learn everything, the good, the bad, the truth of who we are as a nation. And everyone should know the truth of Selma,” Biden said.’

Did he mention the black jungle?

The Selma march wasn't an important event at all. People got beat up, but nothing changed as a result.

Why do you think that its so important it needs to be emphasized and talked about nowdays?

It was certainly covered in the newspapers of the day, but it really wasn't big news that most people that were around even took note of.

You are wrong and it's as important today as it was back then because it shows how far the "other side" was/is willing to go to prevent Black Americans from voting and subsequently causing a potential loss of power when the dynamics of Congress shift.

Granted, as a child and even an adult, I never understood why there were people willing to kill others to prevent them from voting. This last mid-term election highlighted why very clearly this is so important to some people, a case in point. Kevin McCarthy's quest for the House speaker's seat and the attempt to regain Republican control of the Senate.

Fifty years ago, on March 7, 1965, hundreds of people gathered in Selma, Alabama to march to the capital city of Montgomery. They marched to ensure that African Americans could exercise their constitutional right to vote — even in the face of a segregationist system that wanted to make it impossible.
On the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, state troopers and county members violently attacked the marchers, leaving many of them injured and bloodied — and some of them unconscious.
But the marchers didn't stop. Two days later, Dr. Martin Luther King led roughly 2,500 people back to the Pettus Bridge before turning the marchers around — obeying a court order that prevented them from making the full march.
The third march started on March 21, with protection from 1,000 military policemen and 2,000 Army troops. Thousands of people joined along the way to Montgomery, with roughly 25,000 people entering the capital on the final leg of the march. On March 25, the marchers made it to the entrance of the Alabama State Capitol building, with a petition for Gov. George Wallace.
Only a few months later, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act, which President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law on August 6, 1965. The Voting Rights Act was designed to eliminate legal barriers at the state and local level that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote under the 15th Amendment — after nearly a century of unconstitutional discrimination.

Wait. So you think including the events of Bloody Sunday on history lessons is a bad thing and should be hidden?

No, it should be revealed to all that democrats were always the major driving force behind slavery in this country, owned slaves, and supported the KKK.

Nikole Hannah-Jones is a starter....then there's the unproven CRT 'theory' being pushed in schools as fact....for openers.
That's a name of an individual, not some reimagining.

List one to threee schools teaching Critical Race Theory.

Didn't give him much of anything, in fact. He reminds me of one of those stuffed animals you could record on and it would repeat any ole horseshit thing you fed it.

My brats did no good with those things. I eventually just had to wrassle 'em back away from them and gleefully give them to some other unknowing mother.

We've always taught black history but we don't need to be teaching "White Man Bad".
