This 14th-Century African Emperor Remains the Richest Person in History

In the vast fictional universe of Marvel Comics, T’Challa, better known as Black Panther, is not only king of Wakanda, he’s also the richest superhero of them all. And although today’s fight for the title of wealthiest person alive involves a tug-of-war between billionaire CEOs, the wealthiest person in history, Mansa Musa, has more in common with Marvel’s first black superhero.

Musa became ruler of the Mali Empire in 1312, taking the throne after his predecessor, Abu-Bakr II, for whom he’d served as deputy, went missing on a voyage he took by sea to find the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Musa’s rule came at a time when European nations were struggling due to raging civil wars and a lack of resources. During that period, the Mali Empire flourished thanks to ample natural resources like gold and salt.

And under the rule of Musa, the prosperous empire grew to span a sizeable portion of West Africa, from the Atlantic coast to the inland trading hub of Timbuktu and parts of the Sahara Desert. As the territory grew while Musa was on the throne, so did the economic standing of its citizens.

It wasn’t until 1324 that the world outside of Mali’s border would get a glimpse of the king’s expansive wealth. A devout Muslim in a majority Muslim community, Musa set off on a journey to Mecca for his Hajj pilgrimage. But the king didn’t travel by himself.

The voyage, which would span an estimated 4,000 miles, was travelled by Musa and a caravan that included tens of thousands of soldiers, slaves and heralds, draped in Persian silk and carrying golden staffs. Although records of the exact number of people who participated in the voyage are scarce, the elaborate convoy that accompanied Musa marched alongside camels and horses carrying hundreds of pounds of gold.

Of course, this spectacle was noticed by residents of the territories that Musa passed through—after all, a group so massive was impossible to overlook. The impact the Malian emperor left on the Egyptian people would reverberate for more than a decade.

Arriving in Cairo, Musa’s character was put on full display during his reluctant encounter with Cairo’s ruler, al-Malik al-Nasir. According to texts from the ancient historian Shihab al-Umari, Musa was greeted in Cairo by a subordinate of al-Nasir, who invited him to meet with the fellow monarch. Musa declined the proposition, claiming that he was only passing through on his pilgrimage to Mecca.

The reason why soon became clear to onlookers. “I realized that the audience was repugnant to him, because he would be obliged to kiss the ground and the sultan’s hand,” said a man named emir Abu, as chronicled in the documents. “I continue to cajole him, and he continued to make excuses, but the sultan’s protocol demanded that I should bring him into the royal presence, so I kept on at him till he agreed.”

The meeting grew contentious when Musa refused to kiss the feet of the sultan, and only turned calm after Musa elected to properly greet al-Nasir. Following a conversation between the two men, al-Nasir offered lodging to Musa and everyone accompanying him, and Musa, in turn, left a piece of his incomprehensible wealth in Egypt.

From the markets of Cairo to royal offices to the impoverished people that crossed his path in Egypt, Musa’s generosity and purchase of foreign goods left the streets littered with gold—a resource that was greatly appreciated and in short supply. The people were thrilled—at least at first. Though well-intentioned, Musa’s gifts of gold actually depreciated the value of the metal in Egypt, and the economy took a major hit. It took 12 years for the community to recover.

But the king’s trip wasn’t all about giving. On his voyage, he acquired the territory of Gao within the Songhai kingdom, extending his territory to the southern edge of the Sahara Desert along the Niger River. He would go on to have an empire that spanned several territories, including current-day Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, and Mauritania, in addition to Mali.

However, Gao would be of special importance to the king. This territory, in today’s Mali, is where Musa would build one of several mosques after completing his Hajj. Timbuktu was also an important city for the affluent king, who used his wealth to build schools, universities, libraries, and mosques there. The burgeoning trading hub was where Musa commissioned the Djinguereber Mosque, a famed place built of mudbrick and wood that has stood the test of time, remaining active for more than 500 years.

Word of Musa’s wealth and influence only spread beyond Africa after his voyage to Mecca. Tales of his enormous convoy and generosity continued to be passed on long after his death, which is believed to have taken place sometime between 1332 and 1337. By the late 14th century, Musa had been drawn in the 1375 Catalan Atlas, an important resource for navigators of Medieval Europe. Created by Spanish cartographer Abraham Cresques, the atlas depicted Musa sitting on a throne with a gold scepter and crown, holding a gold nugget.

From the abundance of natural resources he cultivated to the growth and development of communities that he left behind, Musa has a legend that could give the fictional Black Panther a run for his money. As far as wealth goes, it is nearly impossible to quantify the riches that Musa had during his lifetime. The vastness of Musa’s land and material holdings, University of Michigan associate history professor Rudolph Ware explained in Time, seems downright incomprehensible today: “Imagine as much gold as you think a human being could possess and double it, that’s what all the accounts are trying to communicate,” he said. “This is the richest guy anyone has ever seen.”

Hossfly, there is a shitload of legislation and court decisions that back my opinion. What you choose not to believe or agree with is irrelevant.
I agree that Blacks have been victims. What I disagree with is reparations. My white Irish ancestors came here as indentured servants and were treated just as bad as yours. I don't deserve or want any reparations.
No they weren't. That's a lie. Furthermore they participated in racial violence against blacks. You don't seem to understand that reparations are being paid to native americans, Japanese got them, we paid jews reeparations for what Germany did to them and paid descendants of confederate soldeirs reparations.

ALL RISE

This mornings lesson:

IRISH RACIAL VIOLENCE AGAINST BLACKS

The Chicago massacre of 1919 was another conflict started by white Americans against blacks. It began on Chicago’s South Side and lasted approximately 1 week beginning on July 27, and ending on August 3, 1919. Thirty-eight people died, both black and white. Over 500 people were injured, the majority of which were black. An estimated 1,000 to 2,000 people lost their homes with the majority again being black. This was one of over 20 riots in what was called the "Red Summer" of 1919 This massacre had it all, one full week of arson, looting and murder in what is considered one of the worst “race riots” in Illinois history.

Once again, the violence was caused by the tension created relative to competition for work between white ethnic groups and blacks fleeing from the south to what they believed would be safety and decent paying jobs. Due to the Great Migration, thousands of African Americans from the South had moved next to neighborhoods of European immigrants on the South Side and near the jobs in those communities. Since the Irish had established themselves in these communities they defended what they believed was their territory and did so by any means necessary.

The week of mayhem started because of the death of Eugene Williams, an African-American who accidently started swimming in a white swimming area at a segregated beach. So because whites could not tell the kid to swim somewhere else and decided to kill him, whites used this as an excuse to invade black neighborhoods to terrorize the blacks living in them. Blacks were attacked going to and from work. Some blacks organized to protect each other. There were whites that tried helping blacks in their efforts. What about the police? Well, like Sgt Schultz on “Hogans Heroes,” they saw nothing, they heard nothing, and they did nothing.

The Omaha Race Riot occurred on September 28–29, 1919. One cause of this riot were whites feeling economic anxiety because of the increasing number of blacks escaping the south who were trying to find work. Weeks before this riot, federal investigators were warning that a conflict was imminent between black and white workers in Omaha. The animosity appears to have begun in 1917 when management at the stockyards hired blacks as strikebreakers. Nobody likes a strikebreaker, so add that to the reasons whites could give themselves for imposing violence on blacks. Once again, we see that it is the Irish who were the ringleaders in the oppression of blacks. As in Chicago, the Irish had established their power as they were the first immigrants in Omaha and used their political power to maintain an advantage.

Three things, property acquisition, economic anxiety and claims of black male sexual aggression, have been the general standard for white violence against blacks throughout American history. The lynching of Will Brown was started by reports in local media about the alleged rape of a 19-year-old woman named Agnes Loebeck on September 25, 1919. The following day the police arrested Brown. Loebeck identified Brown as the rapist but later reports by the Omaha Police and the Army show she did not make a positive identification. There was an attempt to lynch Brown on the day of his arrest, but it failed.

Omaha at that time was controlled by a political boss named Thomas Dennison. Dennison was the son of Irish immigrants. To be blunt, Dennison was a crook. He controlled Omaha for 18 years before the city elected a non-Dennison flunky for mayor named Edward Parsons Smith. Dennison and his buddies did not like that. Dennison and his friends then race baited the people of Omaha and incited the Omaha Riots.

The Omaha Bee publicized the incident with Loebeck as one of a series of alleged attacks on white women by black men. The Bee was controlled by Thomas Rosewater who was a Dennison ally opposed to the administration of Mayor Edward Smith. These incidents were orchestrated by Dennison while Rosewaters paper highlighted the incidents of criminality to embarrass the new administration. “After citizens finally elected a non-Dennison man, one Edward Parsons Smith, as mayor in 1918, Dennison henchmen were accused of putting on blackface, assaulting women, and then stirring up crowds, leading to the lynching of black man Will Brown and the near-lynching of Mayor Smith.” On the night of the lynching, Omaha Police even caught one of Dennisons men wearing blackface. Dennison nor any of his associates were charged or convicted for what they did. Will Brown was not so fortunate. Brown was lynched, shot up after he was dead, dragged through the streets of Omaha and set on fire. He had committed no crime.

Here endeth the lesson.

Germany paid Jews reparations not America.

Black slavery did not exist in Nebraska or Chicago.

More whites have been killed by criminal blacks than vice versa....you should study up before you open your pie hole.

America paid Jews reparations in 2012. Black slavery is not the only issue. Those like you seem to believe that everything was OK after slavery or that reparations are only for slavery. What happened in Nebraska and Chicago is part of the story and no, more whites have not been killed by crimal blacks than vice versa. I have done the research and perhaps you might want to do more through research than you have before you open your racist white pie hole.

All you have done is soak up black propaganda....and deny the truth.
No, you're the one soaking up propaganda son. You deny the truth.

Obama administration earmarks $12 million in reparations for Holocaust survivors
By Mo Barnes | October 7, 2015 |

There can be no doubt that the Jews of Europe suffered great hardship and genocide under the regime of Adolf Hitler and his allies during World War II. Nazi concentration camp survivors were able to settle throughout the world and eventually founded the nation of Israel. But the Holocaust survivors in this country are still suffering with an estimated 150,000 age 65+ living below the poverty line.

In response, the Obama administration last week approved $12 million in aid over the next five years to assist these survivors.

What obama did was to reward the Jews because they always vote democratic.

breparations plural : REPAIRS
2a: the act of making amends, offering expiation, or giving satisfaction for a wrong or injury

We did the Jews no harm....again Germany gave them reparations.....Obama gave them a few million as a reward for being loyal democrats in America.....the majority of them anyhow....thus obama gave them aid money as a reward....not for any wrong we did them.

History shows that blacks have been victims.
”have been” as in “used to be”

now black peopke born in America are the luckiest black people on earth

Actually they were very lucky to be brought to America in the first place. If they had not been sold into slavery they woud have been executed as they were war captives.....before the African Kings found out they could be sold for money....they were either executed or had for dinner....cannaibalism was rampant in Africa...and some of it still goes on there as well as some modern day slavery.

Also.....most of the slaves from Africa brought to the Americas wound up down in South America....about 70% of them actually....and conditions down there for black slaves were very harsh indeed.

The form of slavery that existed down south on the plantations was very genteel for the most part. They did have to work but they were not mistreated unless they caused trouble or refused to work.

Slaves were very valuable on the plantatation....The plantation owners were good businessmen and they would not mistreat or harm valuable property....they wanted to keep the Negroes happy....and thus ensure they would do the best work....it was like a big extended family.

Hollywood got it all wrong but that is all most know about plantatation life down South.

History shows that blacks have been victims. Liberal narrative has nothing to do with it you stupid bastard.

Every race has been a victim one way or another. You really need to look at history.

The ancestors of most whites in America today bought their passage to America by signing papers to become indentured servants......in truth they were slaves...had no rights....and their mastahs worked them much harder than the plantation owners down south did their slaves.

Most of these so called indentured servants were worked to death under very harsh conditions.

Only about 40 percent of indentured servants lived to complete the terms of their contracts. Female servants were often the subject of harassment from their masters. A woman who became pregnant while a servant often had years tacked on to the end of her service time. Early in the century, some servants were able to gain their own land as free men. But by 1660, much of the best land was claimed by the large land owners. The former servants were pushed westward, where the mountainous land was less arable and the threat from Indians constant. A class of angry, impoverished pioneer farmers began to emerge as the 1600s grew old. After BACON'S REBELLION in 1676, planters began to prefer permanent African slavery to the headright system that had previously enabled them to prosper.

Black Slaves on the Plantations down South.... were treated much better than white indentured servants and actually prospered under the slavery on the plantations....had plenty of good food, adequate housing, good clothes, medical care......the Plantation owners wanted to treat them as good as they possibly could because the Plantation depended on them....and happy Negroes worked much better.

Now their black descendants want to collect money because their ancestors were slaves.....not understanding most whites are desendants of slaves also.....slaves who were treated much worse than black slaves.

So it is nonsense to think the descendants of well treated black slaves should get money from the descendants of white slaves who were most often worked to death, had little to eat, suffered terribly in many ways.

The Powers That Be just figured out a way to make us all slaves without us knowing it. The fact is we are all slaves to the system now.

I beg to differ....they were very lucky indeed....for reasons already pointed out.....slavery enabled them to escape the hell hole of Africa where they would have had very short life spans.

They were very lucky they were brought to North America and not sent to South America where the majority of slaves were sent....and in South America they were treated very differently than our Slaves on the plantations.....down in South America they were treated very harshly.

You can see how the mind control works also. It seems many black people hate white people yet love Biden who's family actually owned slaves. It was manly the upper class that owned slaves in the US also. I guess that is one of the things where people tend to start to love their abusers.

When a African tribe had a war with another tribe and they defeated them....they enslaved the people...and then the Victorious King woud usually kill them until they discovered they could sell them and thus get some real benefits out of their victory.

Incorrect.

Africans could work their way out of slavery and into freedom. Some even became Kings.

KING JAJA OF OPOBO: A Slave Who became King - The Progenitor

I saw the movie. James Earl Jones and Eddie Murphy right? Good flick.
