This is sick, and the worse thing is that the government still runs in the red. They are receiving record income yet they keep having to raise the debt ceiling. Thank you BINO Obama for driving us into debt that our children will never be able to repay.

How else do you expect Trump to pay to have 3 nuclear powered aircraft carriers and their massive fleets sail over to North Korea for no reason?

Anyone talking about tax cuts isn't going to give you one. Republicans just shuffle around taxes.

Those who want to buy more bullets for the military, I wish they'd eat a bullet and so they'd stop driving up my taxes. Cut military spending. Deregulate medical care. Freeze entitlements. It's real simple, people, but you're too stupid to vote for anyone who'll do it. So, you'll go on paying more in taxes than you spend on food and clothing combined.

hmmm I didn't think it was that bad, but yea, the gov's been nickle and dimeing folks pretty bad. The shit part is that those in power are selling the working class out for votes from the lazy and fraudulent/criminal elements of society, thereby growing those elements. It's really sad because I'm not entirely sure how you get out of it once you have such deeply ingrained generational poverty/abuse of the system [aka socialism.] Not to mention the generations of bullshit spending programs, special interest spending, foreign aid, etc. It's a damned mess that political snakes don't want to touch for fear of their careers.

I'm really hoping President Trump can buck the system, break the status quo, and get on track to balance the budget and kill the debt - a tall order for any president, but I really think it's the only shot we have. A career politician would never risk it.

The first step to a balance budget, in my opinion, is to privatize Social Security. Comments?

No, it just means that food and clothing are relatively cheap and plentiful.

Food has been declining as a major expense all over the world, not just in the US>

Imagine what kind of food and clothing you would have without those taxes?

You know there are government regulations that children's sleepwear has to pass so it doesn't burst into flame. You want to dress your kinds in pj's that go up in flames?

The graph does not mean what you say. It just means that people are spending more on other things, just as the OP says.

Actually, the graph means exactly what I say. Food just isn't a big expense like it was in times past when our farms weren't as productive.

of course, even back in 1975, it was only 15% of a household's income.

Those slow burning PJ's will be of no use when the bed or entire house is engulfed in flames.

You do realize that that means the average taxes paid is 14%.
