Port workers strike starts across the East and Gulf Coasts

Updated 1:29 AM EDT, Tue October 1, 2024

Nearly 50,000 members of the International Longshoremenā€™s Association (ILA) are on strike Tuesday against the nationā€™s East and Gulf Coast ports, according to the union, choking off the flow of many of the nationā€™s imports and exports in what could become Americaā€™s most disruptive work stoppage in decades.

The strike, which was also confirmed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as well as the Port of Virginia, began at midnight. There appears to be a wide gap between the unionā€™s demands and the offer of the United States Maritime Alliance, which uses the acronym USMX. The maritime alliance represents the major shipping lines, all of which are foreign owned; as well as terminal operators and port authorities.

Houston is the is the largest exporter for shipping dry goods in America.

The Houston Ship Channel complex and its more than 200 private and eight public terminals, collectively known as the Port of Houston, is the nationā€™s largest port for waterborne tonnage and an essential economic engine for the Houston region, the state of Texas, and the U.S. A 2022 study by Martin Associates reports that business activity at the Port of Houston supports 1.54M jobs throughout the state of Texas and 3.37M jobs nationwide.

This activity helps generate more than $439B in statewide economic value and $906B in nationwide economic value. Moreover, the Houston Ship Channel contributes nearly $10.6B in state and local tax revenue and $62.8B in national tax revenue.

  • 5th ranked U.S. container port by total TEUs
  • Largest Gulf Coast container port, handling 73% of U.S. Gulf Coast container traffic
  • Largest Texas port with 97% market share in containers

He is still due 4 more years in power as president. That is why the democrats throwing everything at him including the kitchen sink cannot stop him- they cannot stop God.

The union says it has continued to talk with the USMX, just not in face-to-face negotiations. Ahead of the strike, it said management knows what it is demanding in order to get a deal done and that any strike would be managementā€™s fault, not the unionā€™s. It said its demands are reasonable given the level of profits in the shipping industry.

Daggett, wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with the words ā€œThe Docks are Ours,ā€ addressed the strikers outside of the Port of New York and New Jersey, in a video posted to an ILA Facebook page.

ā€œI want to tell you all what youā€™re doing is right. This is going down in history, what weā€™re doing here,ā€ he said. He recalled the unionā€™s last strike when he and other union members were on strike for three months to earn an extra 80 cents an hour.

ā€œNow theyā€™re making billions and billions of dollars, through the pandemic, when all of us were working. Whoā€™s the greedy ones here?ā€ he said. ā€œWeā€™reā€™ going to get show themā€¦because nothingā€™s going to move without us.ā€
