On top of that the percentages of the “renewable” generation are arbitrary targets that don’t take into account rising demand over time.

Thus as happens whenever you get economic central planners involved, artificial shortages are induced and market failures occur. The result is that Californians get to pay mini-bar prices for electricity while at the same time having to go without reliable service during peak demand.

Texas doesn’t suffer from the “same issues”, their power generation capacity is more than adequate to meet the States needs at peak demand and they have some of the lowest electricity prices in the Country. Thus their market is healthy and isn’t in danger of suffering market failures like the ones that the California State Government has induced on itself.

The problem in Texas is that even after two cold weather events knocked out their electrical generation capacity they refused to do anything to winterize their power plants. Fortunately the third time was the charm and now it looks like the State is actually going to do something about it.
