Cannot ever be a state.... Washington DC

Hey fine, we'll split WA and OR in half and CA into 3 states adding 4 new red states and 8 senators. :muahaha:
You gotta ask. Will D.C. admitted as a state open the flood gates to new states all over the place?

Residents of those states can be represented by Senators and Congressmen. Residents of DC cannot

DC residents pay more Federal Taxes than 22 other states.
Taxation without representation
What's the Capitol city gonna be?
We can call it Washington DC

or even .... the District. LOL

But the 23rd amend still gives it 3 EV I think. So who votes from the District could have an impact.

And who will pay to maintain the monuments and museums. DC is a place people should visit at least once.

the constution says so.

Where in the Constitution does it say that D.C. CAN'T be a state?

Right here:

Article I

  • Section 8
    • Clause 17
    • To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings;–And

      =====
      From HERITAGE:

In The Federalist No. 43, James Madison explained the need for a “federal district,” subject to Congress’s exclusive jurisdiction and separate from the territory, and authority, of any single state:

The indispensable necessity of complete authority at the seat of government carries its own evidence with it. It is a power exercised by every legislature of the Union, I might say of the world, by virtue of its general supremacy. Without it, not only the public authority might be insulted and its proceedings interrupted with impunity, but a dependence of the members of the general government, on the State comprehending the seat of the government for protection in the exercise of their duty might bring on the national councils an imputation of awe or influence equally dishonorable to the government and dissatisfactory to the other members of the Confederacy.

District of Columbia...same thing only smaller
Kind of like the Vatican

No matter how it is accomplished

Residents of DC should have a right to vote for Congressional representation
Why? They knew the rules when they moved there.

And as much as the rest of America might prefer it, there's no wall keeping them there if they want to move.
So that is your answer to denying basic rights to vote
Dont like it ...move

Guess England could have said the same thing to Colonial Americans complaining about Taxation without Representation

Then it wouldn't be a state. You're confused.....again.

The Vatican is a sovereign city-state. A country, if you will.

You don’t think they were born there?

They can move to a state. States have the constitutional right to Congressional representation. The District does not. It was never meant to.
Why should they have to?
Just to have a basic right as a citizen?

The purpose of the District is set within the Constitution. There would have to be an amendment to change it.

If you feel so strongly about it, why are you not fighting for the production and adoption of an amendment?

Not to get into the "constitution thing" but your post is sort of why that's irrelevant. Does anyone seriously think the Founders thought DC would have an economy based on services and private industry that could support baseball and football teams? Obviously not. What they feared was that a state like PA that had the capital would vote "extra stuff" for PA. Today that's sort of quaint. LOL

But the fed govt pays for so much of DC. From cops to mass transit to infrastructure for tourism. It's just not in DC's interest to be a state.

nah. Just make a smaller district. But it's pretty crazy to do it. But any crazier than making "two dakotas"?

That cannot be done legally short of an amendment.
