Some of the posters here are old enough to remember the epidemics of polio prior to the availability of vaccines.

Many others probably had some of the now-preventable diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, etc. Often these diseases could kill, or result in long-term sequelae.

Even with the availability flu vaccines (the virus mutates frequently), over 20,000 unvaccinated Americans die of flu every year.
