Chomsky: Fight back against NSA spying or be 'complicit' | PCWorld

Now that the extent of the U.S. National Security Agency’s surveillance programs has been exposed by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, it’s beholden on the public to fight back or else find themselves “complicit” in the activities, according to Massachusetts Institute of Technology linguistics professor and philosopher Noam Chomsky.

I couldn't agree more. We live in a country where our government is only allowed as much control as we give them. Unfortunately both parties and their supporters have been complicit for way too long. Republicans should have called out Bush over the Patriot Act, and it's time Democrats called out Obama over these more recent developments.

Chomsky makes very interesting points. I would really like to get into his stuff, would you recommend any books to begin with?

Chomsky's politics include things that both those on the left and right can agree and disagree with. I'd take an objective approach to anything you read of his. As far as his books go, my favorite may be "Pirates and Emperors." Very interesting read.

Desperate times makes strange bedfellows... Or something to that effect. Never thought id agree with one of my worst political enemies.

I think it would be unfair to label Chomsky a "political enemy". As I said in my second post, Chomsky holds beliefs that both those on the left and right can get behind. I wouldn't consider him to be very partisan at all. One thing that can be said about Noam Chomsky is that he is consistent.

I recommend you read his groundbreaking work in linguistics and avoid the hysterical, contrarian nonsense he has written on politics to whore himself out for big $$ and the adulation of self-important academics as well as their vacuous, malleable students.

The basic tenets of Chomsky fiction is that the US has been an "imperial" presence in the world just conquering and converting thru force. While we agree that the US has "bullied" it way around the world and bombed WAAAY too many countries in the past decade, there IS NO imperial bootie to show for that. Is there now?

He is my political enemy because of his Socialist rants against free enterprise and individual sovereignty.. Without which, our general agreement on international non-intervention and civil liberties mean nothing to me..
