Libyans living under ISIS rule in Sirte have described public executions, kidnappings, and floggings carried out at the hands of the militants as they work toward building another stronghold in the Middle East.

As western countries ramp up strikes against the group's de-facto capital of Raqqa, Syria, ISIS (also known as the Islamic State, ISIL, or Daesh) sees Libya as a potential back-up option at which to base its operations.

ISIS' influence in Sirte has been growing over the past year, as it has evolved into what The New York Times described as an "actively managed colony" of the central group.

ISIS now has an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 fighters in Libya, and it has been able to seize territory, establish "media points" to distribute its propaganda, and set up Sharia courts to enforce its strict version of Islamic law.

(ANSAmed) - ROME, APRIL 26 - Libya's government has asked for foreign help to protect its oil wells from the threat posed by the Islamic State (ISIS) militant group and the international community has shown signs of support.

From Hanover, Italian Premier Matteo Renzi guaranteed the 'unanimous support' of the G5 for Fayez al Sarraj's government and that Italy would be 'sensitive' to its requests when they are formalised.

In Tripoli, the presidential council led by Sarraj continues to make small steps forward to establish some order within the country. On Monday it sent a request for help to the United Nations, to European countries and to African states on its border to ask them to help protects its oil resources. This followed a warning of possible attacks on installations on land and at sea. ISIS militants also recently launched a new offensive against the wells in Brega, in the east of the country.

Isis has executed civilians for “sorcery” and “insulting God” in its newest stronghold in Libya as it gathers power in the vacuum left by the country’s civil war.

The so-called Islamic State controls more than 120 miles of Mediterranean coastline, mostly around the city of Sirte, where militants seized power last year.

The hometown of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has been transformed into a theatre of the oppression and brutality practiced in Syria and Iraq, with regular public executions and corpses left hanging or “crucified” in the streets.
