Zone1 Christendom's Trinity - Where Did It Come From?

There is no trinity of a single God from the three. Jesus was VERY clear repeatedly that he was NOT his father and that he was subordinate to God his father but that he was of one mind and belief as him.

Although Trinity is the most important doctrine within most of Christendom's 41,000 denominations, Trinitarians ignore the following facts:

1. There are no scriptures in the Judeo-Christian Bible in support of the dogma of a 3-in-1 god, in which there are three persons (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost) that are co-equal and co-eternal.

2. Neither Jesus Christ nor his disciples of the 1st century AD promoted the teaching that there are three persons within a "godhead," all of whom are co-equal and co-eternal.

3. Trinity did not become official Christian teaching until the 4th century AD, some 300 years after Jesus Christ left the earthly scene and returned to heavenly life, and some 300 years after the last book of the Bible was written.

It would surprise some that there were trinity gods throughout the pagan world for centuries before the idea of a 3-in-1 god was adopted by Christendom. Below are four such examples:

A. In the 2nd century BCE (two centuries before Jesus Christ came to the earth), Egypt had a triad of gods consisting of (1) Horus, (2) Osiris, and (3) Isis.

B. In the 2nd century B.C.E., Babylon had a triad of gods consisting of (1) Ishtar, (2) Sin, and (3) Shamash.

C. In the 1st century C.E., Palmyra, which was an ancient city in Syria, had a triune god which consisted of (1) moon god, (2) Lord of Heavens, and (3) sun god.

D. Even the Hindus in India have their own trinity of gods, as follows: (1) Brahma, (2) Vishnu, and (3) Shiva.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION:

1.
If the teaching of a Trinity god is essential to Christianity, how is it that the doctrine is nowhere to be found in scriptures within Jehovah's inspired word, the Judeo-Christian Bible?

2. If Jesus Christ is part of a trinity in which he has the same power (co-equal) and the same eternity (co-eternal) as Jehovah the Father, how is it that the scriptures repeatedly inform us that Jesus Christ is subservient to Almighty God Jehovah (indicating inequality) and why is it that scripture tells us over and over again that Jesus Christ is "begotten" (indicating he had a beginning)?

3. Why did it take two Roman Emperors/politicians, neither of whom were Christians, to enforce the official Trinity dogma some 300 years after Jesus Christ left the earthly scene?
Along with the testimonies of Jesus and the apostles, (and the OT affirmations[1]), we find clear affirmations of the Son’s deity made by God the Father especially in the prologue of Hebrews. In fact, it was the Father’s testimony that Jesus used to authenticate His own testimony (John 5:31-32; 8:16-17).

In the NT, God the Father clearly substantiated the deity and unipersonality of His Son, Jesus Christ, by the following:

1) The Father openly declared Jesus to be the “Son of God”
(cf. Matt. 3:16-17; 17:5)

2) The Father commanded all of His angels to worship the Son (cf. Heb. 1:6)

3) The Father directly addressed the Son as “the God” whose throne is eternal (cf. Heb. 1:8-9)

4) The Father directly addressed the Son as the “Lord,” that is, the Yahweh of Psalm 102:25-27, the unchangeable Creator (cf. Heb. 1:10-12)

There is subordination within the Trinity. Scripture shows that the Holy Spirit is subordinate to the Father and the Son, and the Son is subordinate to the Father. This is an internal relationship and does not deny the deity of any Person of the Trinity. This is simply something our finite minds cannot understand concerning the infinite God. Concerning the Son see Luke 22:42, John 5:36, John 20:21, and 1 John 4:14. Concerning the Holy Spirit see John 14:16, 14:26, 15:26, 16:7, and especially John 16:13-14.

The Trinity by Matt Slick

God is a trinity of persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Father is not the same person as the Son; the Son is not the same person as the Holy Spirit; and the Holy Spirit is not the same person as Father. They are not three gods and not three beings. They are three distinct persons; yet, they are all the one God.
Each has a will, can speak, can love, etc., and these are demonstrations of personhood. They are in absolute perfect harmony consisting of one substance. They are coeternal, coequal, and copowerful. If any one of the three were removed, there would be no God. (See also, "Another Look at the Trinity")
Jesus, the Son, is one person with two natures: Divine and Human. This is called the Hypostatic Union. The Holy Spirit is also divine in nature and is self aware, the third person of the Trinity.
There is, though, an apparent separation of some functions among the members of the Godhead. For example, the Father chooses who will be saved (Eph. 1:4); the Son redeems them (Eph. 1:7); and the Holy Spirit seals them, (Eph. 1:13).
A further point of clarification is that God is not one person, the Father, with Jesus as a creation and the Holy Spirit as a force (Jehovah's Witnesses). Neither is He one person who took three consecutive forms, i.e., the Father, became the Son, who became the Holy Spirit. Nor is God the divine nature of the Son (where Jesus had a human nature perceived as the Son and a divine nature perceived as the Father (Oneness theology). Nor is the Trinity an office held by three separate Gods (Mormonism).
The word "person" is used to describe the three members of the Godhead because the word "person" is appropriate. A person is self aware, can speak, love, hate, say "you," "yours," "me," "mine," etc. Each of the three persons in the Trinity demonstrate these qualities.
The chart below should help you to see how the doctrine of the Trinity is systematically derived from Scripture. The list is not exhaustive, only illustrative.
The first step is to establish the biblical doctrine that there is only one God. Then, you find that each of the persons is called God, each creates, each was involved in Jesus' resurrection, each indwells, etc. Therefore, God is one, but the one God is in three simultaneous persons. Please note that the idea of a composite unity is not a foreign concept to the Bible; after all, man and wife are said to be one flesh. The idea of a composite unity of persons is spoken of by God in Genesis (Gen. 2:24).

There is only one God

The first step is to establish how many Gods exist: one! Isaiah 43:10; 44:6,8; 45:5,14,18,21,22; 46:9; 47:8; John 17:3; 1 Cor. 8:5-6; Gal. 4:8-9
  • "I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides Me there is no God," (Isaiah 45:5).
  • "Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel And his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: 'I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me," (Isaiah 44:6).

Therefore, the doctrine of the Trinity is arrived at by looking at the whole of scripture, not in a single verse. It is the doctrine that there is only one God, not three, and that the one God exists in three persons: Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. An analogy would be time. Time is past, present, and future. But, there are not three times, only one.

Nowhere at Matthew 3:16-17 or at Matthew 17:5 does Jehovah indicate he and Jesus are the same god.

Matthew 3:16

After being baptized, Jesus immediately came up from the water; and look! the heavens were opened up, and he saw God’s spirit descending like a dove and coming upon him.

Matthew 3:17

Look! Also, a voice from the heavens said: “This is my Son, the beloved, whom I have approved.”

Matthew 17:5

While he was still speaking, look! a bright cloud overshadowed them, and look! a voice out of the cloud said: “This is my Son, the beloved, whom I have approved. Listen to him.”

Both of those scriptures (where I bolded the portions in red) debunk Christendom's Trinity because they both indicate Jesus needed Jehovah's approval. Or are you telling those reading this thread that God approved himself? If so, where's the logic to that?

3. Why did it take two Roman Emperors/politicians, neither of whom were Christians, to enforce the official Trinity dogma some 300 years after Jesus Christ left the earthly scene?
I have attempted before to explain that their is a Godhead of 3. I'll keep it simple with a few NT verses. To start with, the word "Godhead." Colossians 2:9, "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily." This is speaking of Jesus Christ being one member of the Godhead and has a physical body.

Next, we know that the Father is God. No one is denying this. God the Father. The question is, is Jesus and the Holy Ghost also a member of the Godhead and therefore their title is also "God." John 1:1, 14 ends this question. "In the beginning was the Word (Jesus). And the Word (Jesus) was with God (Father). And the Word (Jesus) was God (The Father?) Since I've already established that there is a Godhead (Plural), then "God" here refers to Jesus title. This does not mean Jesus usurps his Father in authority. Not even close. As stated in verse 14, not the same personage, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth."

In Philippians 1:2, there is the distinction made so that it is clear that the Father is the Father God and the Son is the Son God, "Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. God the Father and God the Lord Jesus Christ. They are separate personages. So, the traditional Christian trinity is false. But, there are still three members of the Godhead.

The Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead. Acts 5:3-4, But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? And after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? Thou has not lied unto men, but unto God. Lying to the Holy Ghost is lying to God. The Holy Ghost is God also.

Please do not bible bash with other scriptures. This is plenty to meditate on.

Here is a good debate on principles of the trinity between a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and one who believe in the philosophy of the Trinity.

There is no trinity of a single God from the three. Jesus was VERY clear repeatedly that he was NOT his father and that he was subordinate to God his father but that he was of one mind and belief as him.

-----
No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.
-----
In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Not all Christians accept the he Catholic trinity

I just knew there was some Jewish humour behind tbe movie “ Nuns on The Run”. And l wasn’t wrong. The director was Jewish.

The Mother Superior of the Convent was played by the Jewish actress Janet Suzman.

Here’s an irreverent take on the Trinity.

Nowhere at Matthew 3:16-17 or at Matthew 17:5 does Jehovah indicate he and Jesus are the same god.
There has never been and never will be a human being that was God or became God either before during or after their human existence.

I never did understand the concept of a Holy Ghost. What is that anyway?

Jesus predicted that God would send another person like him, a human being, to be their Advocate. John 14:16

There is only one God with two witnesses, two olive trees, two lamp stands attending the Lord of all the earth.

Sure, anyone can see the many wonderful things worshipping and eating a triune mangod has done for you.

The Holy Trinity was a way of glossing over the inherent contradiction of Jesus being human and God at the same time.
The trinity was an existing concept of Mithraism, the secret mystery religion of the roman government and military

In the beginning was the Word (Jesus). And the Word (Jesus) was with God (Father). And the Word (Jesus) was God (The Father?)
In the beginning was the word. and the word was with the God (Ho theos), and the word was like God, (theos) (not God).

This just means that the existing metaphor for the word of God, manna from heaven, became the flesh of Jesus, a new metaphor for a new revelation from God.

It was never about God becoming a man.
