The reason the South panicked and formed a Confederacy was that they were losing when it came to adding new Slave States. New States did not want slavery and the Senate and House would move from 50/50 to radically against slavery.

Forming a country to assure slavery would exist forever was their best option

And any ‘negotiation’ wouldn’t be, the slave states would retain slavery pursuant to some ‘compromise’ – such as slavery would remain lawful for another 20 years at which time there would be another ‘negotiation.’

That Trump and his supporters would allow slavery to continue comes as no surprise.

Negotiations continued from November 1860 to April 1861 when the South broke them off by firing on Ft Sumter.

He made that clear in his first inaugural address – telling the South that slavery was constitutional, that he had no intention of interfering with slavery in the South, and begging the slave states to not start a war out of an unwarranted fear that the Federal government would interfere.

But the states in lawless rebellion started the treasonous insurrection of 1861 regardless, solely for the purpose of preserving slavery.

They had the Great compromise, the 3/5ths compromise, the Missouri compromise. They ran out of compromises.

Slavery was safe for at least a few decades

But the hotheads in the South forced secession, hotheads forced an attack on Ft Sumpter, hotheads assured the North could not beat them in a war

The South ranted about “States Rights”

But States Rights did not apply to northern states who banned slavery in their states. The South insisted their slaves were still their property in free states
