"President Donald Trump on Monday urged Congress to privatize the U.S. air traffic control system, saying it would make U.S. airports more efficient.

At a White House event attended by GOP lawmakers, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and airline industry representatives, Trump signed a letter sending his legislative priorities to Congress. The event was largely symbolic, as lawmakers need to pass a plan before Trump can sign it into law.

The push to privatize air traffic control, largely supported by U.S. airlines and long backed by some congressional Republicans, would separate the function from the Federal Aviation Administration. In his remarks, Trump said he seeks to set up a "self-financing, nonprofit organization" that will not need taxpayer money to function.

"If we adopt these changes, Americans can look forward to cheaper, faster and safer travel," Trump said.

The complex FAA air traffic control system oversees about 50,000 flights in the U.S. per day and is considered one of the safest in the world. However, it has faced criticism over the pace of its transition from radar systems to satellite and digital operations."

Good idea and LONG overdue, next step privatize airport security.

Airport security has been privatized in several major airports. They have also been the source of many failures.

If you think a private company can make a profit doing what the TSA does, you are one heck of a businessman.

So if the taxpayers don't pay for this service, who does? Fliers? Airlines?

well my question is....how would they finance themselves?...
The airlines (and ultimately passengers) via user fees, which makes more sense than having tax payers subsidize travel costs and having the most inefficient institution known to man (government) run it.

It doesn't need to operate at a profit , it's an operating expense for the airlines and it's one that tax payers are subsidizing whether they ever travel via air or not, let the airlines get together and figure out how best to operate it and let the people that actually do the traveling pay the full cost of it.

It's not like the government is doing a good job at it or have any incentive to control costs, just the opposite.

Over 80% of the costs are already paid by the taxes associated with the Airport and Airway Trust Fund. Security fees on tickets fund the TSA. but at a much lower percentage. Those funds will have to come from somewhere.

High stress, high burnout/turnover and private biz cutting salaries ... what could go wrong.

Well if there is one industry that looks out for the benefit and safety of consumers....it's the airlines!!!

Lol!!!

Yeah, President Trump will get the planes to fly on time by giving the stewardesses cattle prods!

I thought about this last night (among other things LOL) but if it weren't for Trump's management incompetence in anything not involving a sole proprietorship, I wouldn't be so negative. There are technological fixes that could improve airport efficiency. I don't think you want Untied running air control, but in a sane world biz and govt could cooperate, and let the industry run air traffic control subject to some general regulations.

Sort of like how the gop is attempting to redeaux Dodd Frank. I don't have much faith in the gop, but conceptually a lot of regulation could be gotten rid of if banks were better capitalized against risk. That should work, but the gop caved in and will not let banks bet on derivatives with YOUR money.

I sure wouldn't want United and companies like that running things.

The CEO of FEDEX wants the new system. Good enough for me. I'm sure there are many more knowledgeable CEOs who agree.

Everyone wants a new system. Problem is the cost and change over . I guess it'll be gps based and way more efficient .

The gov haso done just fine all these years . The airline industry brought us 911 and. The bailout that followed .

So What’s the Deal With Air Traffic Control Reform?

This is a very interesting piece about the president’s initiative to put into effect proposals dating from the 1970s. The legislative package sponsored by Representative Bill Shuster, the Republican chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, passed the House last year but got hung up in the Senate. The president feels positive it can pass this year.

So, just what is it all about?

The article spells out:

What is Trump suggesting?

Why would anyone want this?

Has this worked in other places? (In over 50 other nations)

What does this mean for me?

Who’s into the reform?

Who hates it? (Congressional Democrats of course)

Uh, what to air traffic controllers do anyway?

We simply need to upgrade infrastructure. The private sector will Only do it for a profit.

Not really a super new proposal, maybe with Trumps support it can get somewhere. Something I didn't see in you article.

Shuster and other privatization advocates argue that spinning off air traffic control into a nongovernment entity would allow for a more efficient system and rapid, cost-effective improvements in technology, in part by avoiding the government procurement process.

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association, the union that represents controllers, came out in favor of Shuster's legislation earlier this year.
