Today’s Gospel is about Jesus advising us it our eye causes us to sin, pluck it out. If our right hand causes us to sin, cut it off. It’s so easy to get caught up in the literal pictures of removing a body part, that we miss the message. Some points from a homily today.

What are we doing that makes us less than who we want to be?

Are we a couch potato, a gamester, eating/drinking the wrong things—what is we are doing that we know we should stop? Cut it off. All the way, right now—and don’t think about just giving it a little trim, because our future selves are relying on the action taken today. Think about it. Restriction—the amputation we make today--is the first step into the freedom of who we plan to be tomorrow and the life we will be living.

For me: I am cutting off ready-made meals because they have me sliding into being a lazy cook. What about you? Is there an amputation you want to make in your life today that will better life for the future you?

why dont you take Jesus' words literally here?

How do you know it isnt literal?
Does believing in things you make up justify the savagery thats in the bible? Does that make it more acceptable to believe in?

English is a subjective language whereas Hebrew is object/picture oriented. The very literal translation of 'anger' is "nostrils flared". When Hebrew/Aramaic is one's first language, thinking in terms of pictures/metaphors comes naturally. The Book of Revelation is a very good example of this.

but cannabalizing jesus isnt symbolic?

He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. John 6:56. OK GUYS Meri thinks this is literal but the other symbolic lol.
How many disciples left Jesus once he said to cut off a hand, pluck out an eye? None. How many disciples left Jesus when he said one must eat my flesh and drink my blood? Many. How many early Christians were going about without eyes and hands? None. And how many early Christians were participating, worthily and with faith, in the Lord's Supper? All.

When they heard what he said they recoiled in horror and gave him a chance to soften it; to make it symbolic. What did Jesus do? He leaned into it. He did not soften it. He did not make it symbolic.

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

Nothing. I learned many years ago that doing all of those things for “God” simply made me miserable and didn’t seem to earn me any rewards.

Maybe you did it for the wrong reasons.
I’m the sort of person who expects payment at time of service for everything in my life. Deferred payment/pleasure is not something I deal with. Especially not when I’ve been repeatedly abused by the entity for which I did the work in the first place.

I stopped playing the Christianity game when I realized it had been 27 years of abuse without reward, no matter how hard I tried to do what was asked of me.

I couldn't care less. I'm not the droid you are looking for.

Yet you found it necessary to comment… to the Ignore List you go.
Yes, because you were doing it wrong. I don't care if you ever do it right. It doesn't affect me one bit. But I am going to tell you that you are doing it wrong.

Where we differ is I don't believe God set things up to do for Him. I believe he points to the ways of love/joy we can embrace for ourselves. In the past, you have said things that indicate your bottom line is that you want payment. Love of money. God advised love of money interferes with other blessings that are available to mankind.

Not necessarily money. There are plenty of other forms of payment out there. The biggest part of the of always was that the more I did, not only didn’t I get the good stuff in life, but I continued to accrue the bad stuff in life at an accelerated pace.

Jesus was still alive- obv was symbolic; also said do this in memory of me. Wine is not blood by the way He said fruit of the vine= wine/juice.

As noted in scripture, it is much more than symbolic. Who else would we remember?

Yes, it is a hard teaching...who/which faith can believe it? Catholic. Orthodox. Coptic.
