Dems flip on Bush's Guest Worker Program
Immigration: Democrats on Board | National Review Online
"Senator Barbara Boxer (D., Calif.) wasnt always a fan of comprehensive immigration reform. In 2007, as the Senate was debating the reform package backed by President George W. Bush, she warned that it would exert downward pressure on wages at a time when we are already losing our middle class.
She sponsored an amendment to eliminate the bills guest-worker program, which would have allowed about 600,000 unskilled workers into the country on temporary visas. The program, Boxer argued at the time, was designed to create a permanent pool of insecure and low-paid workers whom I believe will never leave the country, even though they are supposed to, according to the rules of the program. This will only continue the cycle of illegal immigration.
THE FLIP
"Fast forward to 2013, and those concerns have all but disappeared. On June 7, Boxer praised the fair and effective guest-worker program in the Gang of Eight legislation. The bill will increase wages for workers, she said. Im excited about it . . . It is so overdue. And though Boxer said she would push for amendments that are friendly to workers, her support for the final package is all but guaranteed."
This shows how dems steal ideas from republicans and label them as their own.*
