Did anyone know that federal law prevents farmers from fixing their own tractors, that's nuts.....

John Deere is on the left?

Who'd a thunk it?

Corporations support big government....you guys are too dumb to realize they are not right or left...they are "buy politicians and use them to protect their interests and attack their enemies" and that is one reason we want a smaller government....
A corporation defending their proprietary rights is the uktimate in capitalism. Screw the farmer trying to save a buck.....John Deere needs its money

Doesn't sound left to me
Career politicians/progressives are the enemy of the farmer/rancher. Fuck face
Really most farms are corporate owned.
Fail.
There are only a handful full of family farms left in the US .
You don't have the wherewithall to be a farmer.
The framer/rancher makes the farm/ranch, not federal government.

what framer/rancer? :cuckoo:

again, federal land.

Only in a free society which this one is not anymore. Sad!

we can buy a $5 cube and plug it into our cars and get a detailed reading of every major system and how it is working, or not.

many auto part stores will do the same so you know what really needs repair and not spend more on fixing the car than is necessary.

Most farmers can't spend the time for their equipment to be down, to take it into town and to wait for it to be fixed.

Gum and cigarette wrappers, chewing gum, paper clips, duct tape, staples, what ever is on hand to get the dang thing running. Many farms used to do their own iron works and sharpen their own blades. Farmers should if they want to do what ever they can on their farm to save time, money and keep things running

Really? My grandparents were farmers in Georgia
I have cousins who still are.
Fail.

Because you went and spent a week with granny and papa and went to the hen house to gather eggs, does not make you an expert in the area of farming. You showed how gullible you are by saying that most farms are corporate owned and that may be true. But the corporations (for tax reasons) are the family's that get out and do the freaking work 7 days a week. Get the fuck out and see what happens in the real world dipshit...

This is the problem with the left........every single aspect of life eventually comes under control of some federal agency or dimwitted bureaucrat......

Did anyone know that farmers are prevented from fixing their own tractors, that by federal freakin law they have to hire a contractor to do it....?

This is just nuts....

Farmers fight for the right to repair their own tractors | Fox News

They're attempting to get legislation passed in their states that would enable them, for the first time since the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, to repair their own tractors or get an independent mechanic to help.

At the root of the morass is the software that helps run modern tractors and their sensors, diagnostic tools, and other high-tech elements. If farmers so much as open the metaphorical hood to check out the computers they could be violating the federal act, reports Modern Farmer.

Mick Minchow, a Nebraska farmer for more than 40 years, is among the many who are fed up, reports Lincoln Journal Star. As it currently stands, any problem with his John Deere 8235 R requires a trip to the dealer and costs him important time.

What he'd like to be able to do, per the paper, is something as simple as looking up the system code to determine if it's a serious problem or something as mundane as replacing a filter.

John Deere's argument, as reported byWired, is that giving farmers free rein over the software would "make it possible for pirates, third-party developers, and less innovative competitors to free-ride off the creativity, unique expression, and ingenuity of vehicle software." Other potential issues that have been floated: the financial hit such a change could wreak on dealerships, and the complications of buying used equipment whose software was improperly changed.

that's nonsense.....

you simply can't copy proprietary software.

statute in question is the1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act

  • Title III, the “Computer Maintenance Competition Assurance Act,” creates an exemption for making a copy of a computer program by activating a computer for purposes of maintenance or repair.

is there some reason you feel entitled to others' property? the corporation pays for R&D. they should profit from it for as long as it's protected.

if there are exceptions which need to be legislated or modifications which you want to suggest, write your senator and representative.

otherwise, like the wingers in montana you don't get to steal property that isn't yours.
that's nonsense.....

Allowing owners to buy diagnostic and updateable software is not a violation of any law nor does it require anyone to copy any software.

It could be like any other piece of software that allows you to update your system online or fetch updates manually.

But in all likelihood the farm equipment makers have a deal with the major shop chains to prevent this so that Farmer Brown has to have his tractor towed in for unecessary diagnostics that waste time and money.

I'm sure the dealers are franchises ,if so they get their cut.

I would bet that John Deere is not licensing out their software but selling it as part of the vehicles factory installed software package

Why would they license their own software to themselves?
